Christmas comes but once a year - along with a flurry of cards with insufficient postage on them for which the Post Office wants to charge me £2 to deliver them.
This is an outrageous price and way beyond what they used to charge and has been unilaterally imposed
I am wondering whether I should pay this extortionate amount or tell them to return them to sender
Any ideas?

a flurry of cards with insufficient postage on them
Wow, I get maybe one of those a year. Generally, from somebody who was too drunk at the time of posting to remember whether it was the Queen's face that he had to lick, or her backside? But if you're getting a full-on flurry, then what sort of friends have you got? Unless you're expecting an inheritance from somebody, let them go.

It's not really way beyond the old charge. For the ten years up to October last year it was £1 plus the missing postage (so would be £1.64 now for first class).
Now it's a flat £1.50 for insufficient postage, and £2 for completely unstamped.
Scott.

The usual one I experience is where the letter has been deemed to a come into the large letter category by a mm or two.

Depends who the sender is. My PO lets me look at the letter first and then decide whether to accept it or send it back. Unless I recognise the sender and want to hear from them, I send it back. Ask yours if they will show it to you.
In the US all post with insufficient postage is returned to the sender automatically. Americans always put a return name and address on all post - in fact the USPS won't accept an item unless it has a return address. Wish people did that here.

Also common for cards with 3D bits that exceed the 5mm maximum thickness.
Wonder if a sender where traced gets the charge after a refuse-to-pay return.

Ha ha - the local post office seems to pre-print the demands so I usually say good morning to the postman before he puts stuff in the box. He just has the card saying I have to pay - not the offending letter.
It's a 14 mile round trip to the post office that has the letter so it costs more to go and look than it does to pay the fee.
