Pence off Petrol/Diesel in supermarkets

Just wanted to know, what happens if you go in buy something a bit pricey, costing over £50 in one go, with the clear (sneaky) intention of getting the coupon for money off fuel, then come back and return the stuff back? do they then reduce that discount on the fuel, when they refund you the cost of the returned item? Personally, I don't find the effort in this worth it, but wondering what customers do, and what the stores have in place for such situations.
