GDHYP 41st purchase - pre-poll

#11302

Postby Gengulphus » December 2nd, 2016, 4:01 pm

Many thanks to all those who nominated shares in http://www.lemonfool.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=1140#p10297.

Here's a copy of the state of the portfolio from the start of that thread, updated to use today's closing prices and cash total. I've not updated the forecast income and yield and figures, as they're a bit more work and very unlikely to have changed significantly in a couple of trading days.

Notes:
(+) These companies are proposed top-ups to existing holdings rather than new holdings.
(*) Berkeley Group's interim results today have announced changes to their dividend / capital return /
buyback plans. There is no chance that those are yet reflected in the DigitalLook forecasts that
these figures are based on, so treat these figures with great caution!

Note that I do not regard the information in the above table as enough for a proper decision about which is the best share to buy for GDHYP - it is for example missing information on debt levels and on the companies' dividend growth records. That doesn't mean that anyone has to look at those aspects (or indeed others) of the shares when deciding which one to vote for - just that I recommend doing so.

Please vote for the candidate you think is the best of the 9, or for the extra "None of the candidates is at all suitable for this GDHYP purchase" option if you don't think any of the candidates will do at all. (Note that the extra option is not "None of the candidates is the best company for this GDHYP purchase". For example, if you think that the best company to add hasn't been nominated but the second best has been, and the second best is good enough even though not ideal, please vote for the second best, not for the extra option. Also note that the extra option will not "win" the poll - it is just meant to provide me with feedback about the extent to which people think GDHYP has "painted itself into a corner".)

Voting in this pre-poll will end in 2 days' time, on Sunday December 4th. In accordance with my now-usual rules, the top three shares will go through to a final run-off poll, which I also expect to last two days and to end in time to set up the Halifax ShareBuilder purchase on Wednesday December 7th. More candidates will get through to that final run-off poll if there is a tie for third place.

Re: GDHYP 41st purchase - pre-poll

I have now posted the final run-off poll at http://www.lemonfool.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=1264#p11794 - this has happened quite quickly because it's been pretty clear which were going to be the top three remaining candidates for some time, so I could prepare most of it in advance and just fill in some last-minute details.

I should say that I was a bit surprised when the candidates thread was locked shortly after posting this pre-poll, but on thinking about it I have no objections at all to it having been done - it makes certain that any continued discussion about this GDHYP purchase happens in one place. So expect this topic to be locked as well, probably fairly soon after this post, but please feel free to discuss any aspect of this purchase in the final run-off poll topic. (But if you want to discuss GDHYP's strategy more generally, i.e. not something specific to this purchase, it might be best to start a new topic.)
