My latest HYP purchase -- BLND

#1715

Postby ManInTheStreet » November 7th, 2016, 2:40 pm

Today I've just bought BLND (at 598.41p). My HYP now looks like this (these are in purchase order):

Code: Select all

Company               EPIC        % of portfolio
Tesco                     TSCO        5.2
Carillion                 CLLN        5.3
Imperial Tobacco    IMB        10.9
Royal Dutch Shell   RDSB       7.6
BHP Billiton            BLT           6.2
South 32               S32          0.8
AstraZeneca          AZN          8.0
National Grid         NG.           8.9
HSBC                     HSBA       9.0
Legal and Gen       LGEN        6.9
Tate and Lyle         TATE         8.9
Persimmon            PSN          7.5
Vodafone               VOD         7.3
British Land           BLND       7.5

Discussion on this purchase can be found here: http://boards.fool.co.uk/Message.aspx?mid=13454663

Ignoring S32 that brings my HYP up to 13 shares.

(I've used the CODE option, but it has taken quite a bit of fiddling to get it looking reasonable.)

Post Brexit BLND has fallen. I've no concern about the dividend, however an investment in British Land at this time is a wee-bit of gamble on Mrs May's negotiation not closing down The City of London! I have no Dry Powder currently but I have contemplated BLND myself. FWIW I approve of making the gamble on a workable post-Brexit deal and London continuing to thrive! My current holdings below, some the same as you(!) ;) , by way of disclosure: -

BP - 7% RR. - 5%
BATS - 5% RDSB - 8%
DGE - 7% SN. - 3%
G4S - 5% SKG - 8%
GSK - 5% STAN - 6%
HSBA - 6% TSCO - 3%
INCH - 6% ULVR - 8%
JLT - 6% VOD - 3%
REL - 5% WPP - 6%

GLA!

Tables aren't easy, but having a few minutes spare, I thought I would try to redraw your one:

Code: Select all

Company              EPIC        % of portfolio
Tesco                TSCO           5.2
Carillion            CLLN           5.3
Imperial Tobacco     IMB           10.9
Royal Dutch Shel     RDSB           7.6
BHP Billiton         BLT            6.2
South 32             S32            0.8
AstraZeneca          AZN            8.0
National Grid        NG.            8.9
HSBC                 HSBA           9.0
Legal and Gen        LGEN           6.9
Tate and Lyle        TATE           8.9
Persimmon            PSN            7.5
Vodafone             VOD            7.3
British Land         BLND            7.5

Hope you don't mind. It's a question of fiddling with spaces and previewing constantly.

Hi

Do you have any thoughts on BLND vs LAND (Land Securities) ?
I looked at both just after the Brexit vote but decided on LAND for the slightly higher dividend yield and because their property portfolio is more diverse.
May well buy some BLND too in the near future.

My experimenting has found that copying into NotePad, replacing tabs with spaces and then adjusting the alignment, is more or less foolproof.

There was an Excel macro that did it for you, but I've switched to LibreOffice, so that will no longer work.

In LibreOffice Calc, you can get space-delimited tables by going to "Save as...", selecting the .csv option, choosing "Edit filter settings" before saving, and then selecting "Fixed column width". You need to make sure you get your column alignments correct for headings. Here is an example I just knocked together. (Data entirely fictitious...)

Code: Select all

EPIC             PRICE     NUMBER      VALUE
3IN              87.72     130.07     114.10
AMFW            256.29     783.78    2008.71
AV               40.36     334.74     135.11
AZN             705.24    2752.79   19413.81
BDEV            660.61     460.16    3039.86
BKG             541.84    3114.91   16877.90
BLND             49.41     561.54     277.48
BLT             943.41    1337.18   12615.04
BP              229.12     495.83    1136.06

There is supposed to be a fixed width option (http://www.lemonfool.co.uk/faq.php?mode=bbcode#f2r1) but I can't seem to get it to work. I was expecting CODE to be the same as PRE. I had removed all tabs (my favourite spacer, as that is what they were originally designed for) but as Bree rightly says they can vary from editor to editor.

I was thinking about inserting an image, but alas that means you can't then scrape the data, so that's no good on a site whose spirit is sharing. Without a fixed-width font we are a bit stuck.

The code tags do work.
Insert the code tags then type what you want between the tags. Like this, only use [ instead of < and ] instead of >

Col1 Col2 Col3
aaa bbb dddd
</code>

Have aplay on the Testing 123 board

Anyway whatever the problems with tabs etc, I do not see much to choose between British Land and Land Securities. I hold British Land but not sure I would buy it today. it is a bit of a gamble on Brexit and I think I would prefer an internationally diversified share, such as Reckitt Benkieser ( I think I hold the obvious ones except possibly for RB and say Diageo)

Yes, sorry, forgot to mention: never use tabs. As Terry mentioned, copying into Notepad will help before pasting into a reply window, although not strctly necessary.

As for the difference between BLND and Land Securities - years ago I decided Blnd was the favoured one but can't remember why! Not much use, so I'll get my coat,

PS invest half in each?

When I was looking for a candidate to add to my HYP a few years back, BLAND and LAND cropped up in my eliminations. In the end decided that for this "sector" a broad range IT seemed a better and safer option. Never did buy one though. If I was to choose today BLAND seems the logical choice but not sure I would be looking to add to that sector at the moment. Maybe I am being too cautious, IMO.

I don't know why some people claim there is little difference between BLND and LAND from an HYP viewpoint.

BLND forecast yields for 17 and 18 are 4.8% and 4.9% on forecast dividends of 28.6p and 29.4p at 597p

For LAND the FYs are 3.7% and 3.9% on FDs of 36.8p and 38.4p at 994p.

Thus BLND has a significant forecast yield differential in its favour. Other factors need to be examined before choosing but quite clearly it is wrong to claim that there is no appreciable difference. There is.

On the basis I could only get Dividend from Smurfit Kappa post-tax in Euro, I've sold. Consequently cash has been released from which I've added British Land ab initio and topped-up Smith & Nephew and Vodafone. My holdings therefore: -

Code: Select all

EPIC | SP    | %  | MoS
BP   |  4.57 | 7% |  37.95%
BATS | 43.85 | 5% | -11.45%
BLND |  5.91 | 4% |  -0.61%
DGE  | 20.07 | 7% |  58.46%
G4S  |  2.46 | 6% |  37.93%
GSK  | 15.28 | 5% | -10.15%
HSBA |  6.40 | 6% | 100%+
INCH |  6.16 | 6% | 100%+
JLT  |  9.58 | 5% |  17.31%
REL  | 13.78 | 5% | 100%+
RR   |  6.69 | 4% |  -0.50%
RDSB | 21.06 | 9% | 100%+
SN   | 10.99 | 5% |  -6.87%
STAN |  6.34 | 6% | -66.62%
TSCO |  2.12 | 4% |  53.08%
ULVR | 31.42 | 7% | 100%+
VOD  |  1.99 | 5% |  -6.16%
WPP  | 17.11 | 6% |  -1.73%

% = % of my portfolio. MoS = Margin of Safety i.e. value of holdings vs. value of my cash in-the-table.

Ignoring S32 that brings my HYP up to 13 shares.

(I've used the CODE option, but it has taken quite a bit of fiddling to get it looking reasonable.)

Looking good thus far ManinTheStreet,

We can't help but have similar HYPs I guess, I hold BLND myself. They currently form 2.5% in value of my 24 share HYP. As it stands right now my intention is to top them up in Dec bringing them up to about 4% in value of the HYP whole.

Regards,

Ian.

If you get it looking right in Notepad first (don't use tabs, just spaces) then you can just copy and paste it into a [code] box here.
