I'm registered on the FT. I've emailed them to ask 'what gives?' - I've got a 'case number' now, let's see what they have to say for themselves :)

Me too. For now I'm going to take the ft100 and ft100-TR from Monday and use an estimate I've previously found to be accurate to 1 decimal place:

    today's ft100-TR = ft100-TR(Monday)/ft100(Monday) x ft100(Friday)

That estimates the ft100-TR as 5512.38 today.

Something surely wrong there. By coincidence I was just looking at it yesterday to update the comparative progress of my Scottish Widows OEIC and it was about 5530. Maybe they got Yahoo to update it ;-)

My favourite of the current howlers on the website is this one:

Pretty sure they held the Christmas office party a little early!

Bree, doesn't your data refer to Thursday's close? That's a day with a couple of XD shares at least, IMB and MKS, so the Total Return will have risen more than the market, which rose by 0.67%. The 11% does seem to be an aberration, however.

For what it's worth, the total return index takes dividends into account when they go ex-dividend, not when they're declared. It's quite noticeable that the ratio of the total-return index to the capital-only index shifts up on the standard ex-dividend day of the week, then remains unchanged for the remaining days of the week apart from a bit of jitter caused by rounding of the index values, companies occasionally choosing to use a non-standard ex-dividend date, and very occasional events like BP cancelling its Q1 dividend in 2010 after it had gone ex-dividend.

If you collect large volumes of data for both versions of an index, calculating their ratio and looking for dates where it deviates from that pattern is a useful way to detect errors.

I take the figure from here:

http://uk.investing.com/indices/ftse-10 ... rical-data

It gives Friday's closing price as 5514.76

Thanks, I have confirmed that is the correct figure. It's also in the FT Actuaries Share Indices for Friday as published in the latest 'World Markets at a glance' pdf here http://markets.ft.com/data/archive Included are all the standard ftse indices (100, 250, 350 All Share, etc.) in £ sterling, euro and Total Return form - yields and p/e too. For the ftse100 it says:

I await the FT's response to my email query with interest, I wonder how they're going to explain their error? :)

No reply from FT yet, despite their auto-reply promising 'within 24 hours'. In the mean time, at least the error has been corrected. The Historical prices page now says: Friday, November 18, 2016 5,514.76 http://markets.ft.com/data/indices/tear ... =UKX.T:FSI

Update: It has now been changed (NOT corrected). The ft100-TR now shows Thursday' figure for the Friday value.

Code: Select all

Friday, November 25, 2016   5,564.00
Thursday, November 24, 2016 5,564.00
http://markets.ft.com/data/indices/tear ... =UKX.T:FSI

The correct figure for Friday 25th seems to be 5573.41

At first it was just funny, ridiculous figures, but now it is getting really irritating, why don't they just leave entries for the day blank or unpublished until they have the correct data, because the errors are so large that they should know at one glance it is not worth posting it on their web site.

It is difficult to believe that the FT cannot sort this rogue data feed/computer glitch over a whole week. This data is used worldwide.

I have given up my near daily download(FTAS TR, FTSE TR, FTSE Yield, FTAS Yield) until they sort themselves out.

Just give up Friday's - it only seems to 'glitch' on a Friday. I reported it again today (and moaned about the lack of a response to my report last week - one promised 'within 24 hours').
