Uranium

I'm surprised none here have mentioned this yet.

I took a shot at these guys NYSE:CCJ (Cameco) back in December at just over $21. I've just topped up again at $28.1. https://www.cameco.com/about.

There's also the English LSE:YCA (Yellow cake) but I missed the rush on that one so to speak. YCA are an interesting one, they aren't a miner. They just hold a fixed quantity of U. Hence enabling the investor to take a view on the spot price. As such YCA have only two employees, both work at home, a very light operation!

Yellow Cake presentation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8861WIlEukQ

I've been of view for a while now, that new investment in nukes will be necessary to deal with bridging the gaps in green energy provision.

Wondered who else has looked at the idea of a long term position on uranium.

I took a punt on uranium more than a decade ago. My timing was all wrong. I bought CCJ also - think it was around $30 when I bought it and I bailed down at around $20.

It is interesting because it is a metal that trades more like an energy share.

Incidentally there are a few low-cost companies like Yellowcake that trade and hold metals but do not mine them, thereby avoiding the messy, expensive and risky part. Other examples are Wheaton Precious Metals (WPM) for silver and Franco-Nevada (FRN) for gold.

Thanks for that. I guess I need to be wary of bubbles/short-term-fashionability here.

U seems to have become more en vogue, post the Ukraine invasion, unsurprisingly. The position I hold is very small, and I'll probably keep like that. Besides it's quite an unusual commodity, in that only a small amount of the stuff once purified is ever actually moved around.

There isn't a 'market' for uranium as such.
It's bought and sold through some kind of contract system rather than offers and bids.
Worth keeping in mind before buying your exposure.

I hold Yellow Cake (YCA) and Geiger Counter (GCL) in my SIPP
My suspicion is I will retire a very rich man due to my exploitation of green politics. Nuclear is the only thing that can work.

But there is an exchange-traded futures market for uranium, on NYMEX. The average investor probably does not want to trade the spot market for uranium, unless you are in a position to take delivery!

Same goes for almost any other commodity.

There is also a Uranium ETF. More here:

https://commodity.com/energy/uranium/trading/

PS: I should earlier have given the correct ticker for Franco-Nevada, FNV.

Yes I think nuclear will have to play a big part.

On a slightly different note, although the quantities involved probably won't be that big, presumably after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, perhaps several of the nuclear armed countries will decide to "revamp" their nuclear [expletive deleted].

My text - Let's call it an ar5enal instead, eh?

Matt

How ridiculous when a top flight football team or a stockpile of armaments are censored. Seriously, I sometimes wonder, is this website intended for grown ups?

Hi AbsoluteZero

I noticed the YCAs price has fallen somewhat of late. I'm wondering whether this could be an entry point. Are you considering topping up?

I top up regularly.
Bought some the other day.

Me too. That's why I bought some CCJ a couple months back.

I don't think it's mug's game, buying when there's a sale on. Neither does Warren Buffet.

I don't really care what Warren Buffet says or does. He can't time the market any better than anyone else.
Problem is when the sale gets better after you have bought.

Sure. And neither you nor I can predict that eventuality. But you need zero powers of prediction to observe today's price is less than yesterday's.

I do care what Buffett says. If someone can demonstrably "do something well", I believe that at times, it's instructive to understand why.

Take care.

I’m still holding CCJ which has just reached a 52 week high …

Sadly the £ has strengthened against the $ and CAD$ so there’s at least 10% effectively taken off the SP!

The joys of international shares!

Take the opportunity to topup another international share then! Then FX is working in the right direction.

Fully invested I’m afraid!

My major challenge is to try and value Cameco as their value does not correlate exactly with the spot uranium price.

So YCA and CCO or CCJ at all time highs ..and although I don’t believe in charting or “technical analysis”, there seems to be real momentum in uranium related stocks.

I continue to hold and Cameco (CCJ or CCO) is now my second largest holding and is up 300%+!

I’m now worried that my delight in this will trigger a fall!
