Small size. In particular, they should not produce irregular or inconvenient layout, e.g. by making lines in the "The team" or "Members" lists become taller, requiring more scrolling. That's at least at the lower levels - if say the 5,000 and 20,000 post levels cause a little bit of vertical spreading, it won't be a significant problem.

As to what they are, stars would be OK by me - but so would plenty of other things. And so would nothing at all.

Personally, I might favour a hierarchy of cakes, beginning with a lemon cupcake, then a lemon cheesecake, a citron tart, and climaxing with a lemon meringue pie.

Agreed, but the cakes must represent rank hierarchy somehow. Perhaps a cheap lemon cupcake. as the lowest level, going up through lemon sponge, etc. to a lemon covered wedding cake or a gin and tonic with lemon.

I like that one. It could also steal an idea from Fool UK where the early ranks were one star, two stars and three stars before going to big red and onwards so the starting icons here could be one pip, two pips and three pips before going to the bigger stuff. Also, maybe after whole-lemon, the final step of Scott's progression could be a lemon tree.
