Steaming Idli without Indian Kitchenware

Found a "South Indian Breakfast Kit" in an asian grocer the other day. It will be added to dinners rather than breakfast!

There are mixes for Idli and Upma plus Dosai and Sambhaar sauce/dip/gravy.

Anyone made Idli (rice dumpling things) without an Idli steamer?

Looking at the proper bit of kit above, and Googling a bit suggests to me that if I shallowly fill the ramekins I have and put them in the saucepan-steamer stack I have, it won't work out too badly.

We used to have an egg-poaching pan - possibly ideal - but it seems to have lost half the removable egg-pocket thingies.

Anyone care to advise/comment please?

Using ceramic ramekins works fine I can report!

Grease well - I used ghee.

Never even heard of idli let alone tried to make them...are they tasty?

these were lightly spiced but they're basically a rice cake/dumpling used to soak up a spicy gravy (Sambar).

So not intrinsically tasty!

But given that the kit was easy to make up, the idli and sambar were an interesting addition to a curry meal.
