The BBC did twice the number of obits in the first quarter of 2016 compared to 2015.
They reckon that the fact a large number of 'big hitters' (Bowie, Prince, Wood, Wogan etc) died early in the year raised our awareness and meant that by May we were all saying 'wtf??' to 2016 and it then became a self-fulfilling prophecy when in fact the numbers for the whole year were not higher by any real standard.
