Great idea for a thread Snorvey.

Here's a fantastic picture that shows that all the major planets in our Solar System can fit into the gap between the Earth and our Moon -

Quite mind-blowing to think that human footprints exist on that little ball of moon-dust...

Cheers,

Fascinating. Am I the only one who's reminded of that early episode of Red Dwarf where they play a snooker trick shot with asteroids and a couple of planets in order to plug a black hole?

But whoever moved the planets cheated by tilting Saturn to squeeze it in despite it's rings ;)

It's a good pic, but I can't help regretting how the drive for efficiency has resulted in a dramatic deterioration in the appearance of modern warships. With all its slab sides (no doubt very efficient in defeating radar) and that silly blob-topped tower it's an ugly beast.

Even a few years ago warships still looked like `proper' ships. By way of comparison here's a pic of a US Navy destroyer, USS Jason Dunham, which was launched as recently as 2009 - https://www.walldevil.com/wallpapers/w0 ... -ships.jpg

The same thing has happened with passenger liners. The traditional ships were elegant and beautifully proportioned, but modern ones look like a floating tower block, and are as ugly as sin.

What a coincidence. I was driving over Portsdown Hill near Portsmouth today, avoiding solid M27, and saw exactly that black rectangular aerial (or whatever it is) that's on the ship atop a building along with various radomes.

That's one of those shows, a bit like Fawlty Towers, that I can watch over and over again.

It'll be interesting to see how many more they can make till they call it a day.

I think I kind of gave up on it after S7 or thereabouts.

I have to admit that the most recent series (XI) felt a bit tired and they all show their age now, but series X was quite good. I liked the actor who plays the simulant 2nd in command who thinks that he has to kill himself with the commander's sword as punishment for failure, sticks it in his belly, but is then told a second later later that he's expected to just polish it. Backing out, embarrassed, picking up what look like chili sausages "Whoops, that bit looks important!" :-)

Nearly had the pic of the month .!

This steam roller was in a steam parade through our town on Saturday but it lost traction and had to pull to the side until more steam was raised.

After a while (and maybe a bit more coal) it suddenly lurched forward , only the front roller was at a 45 degree angle from the road , basically a steam roller "wheelie" ? Don't know if the driver started off with the wheel on full lock ?
It must have travelled about 10 yards with just the right hand edge of the front roller on the road . By the time I had sorted my phone/camera out , the driver had righted it......so this is after what would have been a cracking photo.

Apparently, it's 98% recyclable. That's a helluva size of blue bin they have.

Wonderful picture, but it is Pioneering Spirit picking up Brent Delta.

Well at least the top sides.

There was also this pic showing a very attractive young lady driving a large traction engine .
Not only was she steering this giant through narrow streets and stalls but if you look carefully to the left , you can see she had a tender behind !

Curiously I rather like ship shapes and the like so followed through on your link to the USS Jason Durham. Where's the weapons I thought, one puny gun at the forecastle? Oh how wrong I was (from wikipedia) :
Armament:
1 × 32 cell, 1 × 64 cell Mk 41 vertical launch systems, 96 × RIM-66 SM-2, BGM-109 Tomahawk or RUM-139 VL-Asroc, missiles
1 × 5/62 in (127/62 mm), 2 × 25 mm, 4 × 12.7 mm guns
2 × Mk 46 triple torpedo tubes
1 × 20mm Phalanx CIWS
Aircraft carried: MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopters

Hides it well don't you think?
