Comedy on the BBC has hit rock bottom in recent months. I was thinking of sending them a transcript of this thread as a sort of follow on to "Twenty Twelve"...what do others think? ....

I know that MuntoMan is held to very strict rules about promoting his eponymous fund here, and I find myself wondering why that same standard apparently doesn't apply to Pyad.

The guy has some decent ideas but the shameless self-promotion and arrogant dismissal of other alternatives is a tad galling. I fear he doth self-aggrandise too much.

We don't want a situation where it's OK to say that HYP1 is better than an IT on the other board, but not that an IT is better than HYP1. And Pyad comes pretty close to claiming that when he talks about his returns "crushing" or "slaughtering" other approaches.

If such comparative and superlative statements are not allowed on the other board then that has to cut both ways.

Mods - where is the policy statement referenced a few weeks ago which was going to make things clear? At the end of the day this is your playground, so what you say goes. However I continue to think you are doing a disservice to most posters by allowing a minority to dictate what discussions are to be had.

I completely agree. I stated shortly after the move to TLF that I was no longer prepared to put up with Pyad's rudeness and arrogance and hoped this would be a fresh start. Unfortunately, there are too many sycophants that worship his inane utterances. They also have moderation rights.

Whenever he posts, he insults somebody. I find him intolerable. Why is Pyad permitted by the moderators to arrogantly sneer at and insult other contributors? Why does he have a special status?

So why don't you say what you really think about Stephen Bland?

I think he's been as polite as it is possible to be. If this wasn't such a polite and genteel place (when Pyad is absent) then I'd certainly not hold back.

Better supported? I think you confuse quantity with quality. The signal/noise ratio on the HYP board is appallingly low.

Once upon a time Pyad (or Bland, to use his real name) had a certain following and credibility on TMF...

...So for a while he had some kind of de facto guru status, and the fact that I always thought the Emporer has no clothes on did not detract from that...

Actually, given the mod's note at the end of that post, I think it would be more accurate to say he's been as impolite as it's possible to be (without getting his post pulled).

I don't see why 'ownership' of 'HYP' allows a user to insult and sneer at others. He contributes nothing of note to these boards. As I've previously stated, I was willing to tolerate him on TMF due to his historical links to that website. This website, on the other contrary, has nothing to do with him - he is just another forum poster. Why don't the rules apply to him?

Well that's up to the mods, but this is a place of robust debate so some thickness of skin is needed, and pyad is quite entitled to defend his "brand" here (which he has now successfully commercialised btw, for £159/year ).

I don't engage with him. What rankles is the freedom he is accorded to spread his bile, while others are repeatedly moderated. Interesting and important ideas are shut down and deleted. I think I may also stick to this board in future.

Out of curiosity, have you actually reported any of his impolite comments? If so, were you given a reason why they were left to stand? It would be interesting to know what response you've had...

I believe that discussion of moderation is not encouraged here, but I do feel I should assert that I took considerable care in the post you are citing to avoid any kind of direct personal attack. I restricted myself to a potted history of his contributions, which I believe to be a matter of fact and record. And a criticism of some of his ideas, which surely is permitted here. I also observed that he doesn't seem to get moderated when he promotes his business, which others have also observed.

It is clear that at times he adopts a rather defensive attitude towards criticism of his ideas, and is prone to self-serving hyperbole. But that is anyone's right here if they think it serves their agenda. My comments were designed partly to provide history and context to anyone here who wasn't around on TMF 10/15/20 years ago. And to outline why I believe that less emphasis should be rigidly placed on his ideas as his contributions and influence have declined over the years.
