Scotland win a football match
Dozens of spectators were treated for shock last night as Scotland won 2-0 against Spain.
An eerie silence befell Hampden Park as the final whistle was blown with fans looking on in disbelief, before tearful cheering erupted. Yes! Scotland had beaten a decent team!

Re: Scotland win a football match
To be honest, Spain should have won. If they'd gotten the first goal then it could have been 6 - nil to them.
....but they didnt. And Erland McTominay bagged his second brace in consecutive games.

Although it's interesting, Gracenote reckon that England beating Italy away was about as surprising as Scotland beating Spain at home - and the much bigger shock was Kazakhstan beating Denmark, given that they' rank Kazakhstan below eg Gambia and Martinique.

Given that England and Italy were only seperated by penalties in the last Euro Finals I'd say Scotland beating Spain ever is considerably the more surprising.

You might think - which was why I thought it was notable, but there's a big difference between a draw and a win, particularly when a team has had such a history of organised defence as Italy. And home advantage counts for a lot too.
Just look at the history - their first defeat in any Euro qualifier since 2006 (France), their first Euro defeat at home since 1999 (Denmark).
England had only ever beaten them once in competitive football (World Cup qualifier at Wembley in 1977, with goals from Kevin Keegan and Trevor Brooking) and their last win in Italy was a friendly in 1961 with Jimmy Greaves scoring the winner after two from Gerry Hitchens.
1961.
Given that Gracenote is based on stats, I can see why it ranks so highly in their terms. And England fans never like to give enough credit where credit is due.

I thought in the first half England looked great. In the 2nd either Italy went up a gear or England dropped down one - I'm unsure which. But a gutsy performance indeed. especially when down to 10 men.

Typical football coverage within the UK- the thread title refers to Scotland but half the thread refers to England.
Just need a mention of Gazza on here and the usual reporting will then be complete.

I'm sure we'd all appreciate your contribution to the thread, getting it back on topic.
In case you hadn't noticed there was no thread relating to the England victory in Italy.

Dunno what or who Gracenote is but the Scotland result was the bigger surprise. How do I know? Because I looked at the odds, Scotland were 9/2 to win and England 13/8. England were actually favourites to beat Italy.
Anyone who wants to argue with the bookies be my guest
BoE
ps the annoying thing about the Scotland game is that, unlike the England game, it was not available on terrestrial tv.

Was Scotland winning due to Nicolas Sturgeon resigning or because Humza Yousaf is a safe pair of hands

I bumped in to him in Troon (physically) - I was wearing a kilt cuz I was at a wedding. I apologized and explained I'd been a fan since I had watched him as wicket keeper against Australia that day they showed the Pink Floyd gig live in Venice on TV (despite the fact I'm St Mirren through and through and he'd been a hun). He seemed to take it well
