He probably feels he has done as much as he can for Liverpool and almost certainly will be getting a bit jaded. All managers are not like Fergie. Leave at the top is a great way to do it if you can.

Xabi Alonso is in the frame, and of course has history with the club.

Too soon for Gerrard, and probably always will be.

As a Liverpool supporter it’s difficult to describe just how visceral a shock this was. We thought he was there for another two years, and it was really quite difficult to take in.

It made me realise just how incredibly lucky we’ve been to have him as our manager for the last eight years. Being a Liverpool fan during that period has been a tremendous experience, and it’s a bit like losing a beloved dog - something you knew would happen eventually, but were never remotely prepared for.
