scenario:
gmail account = didds@gmail.com [this isn't actually me so don't email it!]
domain = didds.co.uk [ditto] via fasthosts
using the email forwarding facility at fasthosts for me domain I forward email for me@didds.co.uk to didds@gmail.co.uk
in my thinderbird email client I set up an imap based account to read etc email fro didds@gmail.com.
I also set my reply top address to be me@didds.co.uk
this account uses the gmail smtp server
in mail.google.com I login as didds@gmail.com
In settings I st my reply email address to be me@didds.co.uk
When I now send an email from thunderbird, it arrives fine. If I reply to it it replies to me@didds.co.uk.
However... it shows as being from didds@gmail.com
I would rather that received email show that it is from me@didds.co.uk
With me so far?
So basically I need to masquerade the from address. In gmail.com login, settings, there i in the accounts section an option in the "Send mail as" block the option to "add another email address". It is this bit that I beleive should be used to set up such a masquerade. However, when I try and add the address me@didds.co.uk the next bit asks me to add the smtp settings for me@didds.co.uk. But that doesn't actually exist - all I want to do is masquerade not actually send mail though any other smtp server.
I used to be able to do this a long long time ago - in fact Ive just checked with another email address I own/use in a simplar fashion and its certainly done this way. But presumably gmail have changed things in more recent time?
DAK how I can achieve what I want?
cheers

Re: masquerading email
This contains an address that isn't yours but could be a real person. You shouldn't post it anywhere the spambots will see it.
Use @example.com for illustrative email addresses.
(I don't know any mail program that won't let you set the headers you're interested in, though some of the more restrictive ones may require you to jump through hoops like going into account prefs any time you want to change them.)

In Thunderbird tools - account settings - manage identities button.
Do you have me@didds.co.uk set as default?

The default account is the didds@gmail.com/me@didds.co.uk account and in its settings me@didds.co.uk has both email address and reply to address as me@didds.co.uk
