Transferring Insurance
Separate topic this one cos I think it is more complicated.
Already have shiny new(er) car sitting in garage. Old one one drive, insurance runs out in 3 weeks. Don't really care when I swap over usage, so the question is, when do I swap the insurance?
I can do it now, but past experience tells me the insurance co will charge me 3 months insurance as an "admin" fee for the priveledge.
Or can get second new insurance now and just let the old one run out. But will they give me NCB on 2 concurrent insurances?
Or can let the old one run out FIRST and then get new insurance the day after. Again, am I going to struggle to transfer the NCB to a different vehicle if I do this?
Any advice on "best" course of action?
Thanks

Re: Transferring Insurance
If the new car is registered (and not SORNed) then it needs to be insured, now, or you'll get fined. Or did you get free short term insurance when you bought it?

I can SORN it 'til the swapover. So, original question still stands, what's best option for insurance?

Re: Transferring Insurance
When Mrs S changed cars a year or so back, we just went onto the insurance companies website, logged in and changed it ourselves.
No charge.
And her insurance came down a bit at renewal.

I have never been charged for swapping over insurance to a new vehicle.

I was, with Saga.
It went roughly like this.
Saga premium £170
With 3 months left to go, changed car. Saga charged £17 "extra" plus £25 admin charge.
Renewal from Saga came in at £270.
Shopped around and got same cover elsewhere for £170.
Go figure.
Scott.

Re: Transferring Insurance
My past experience is the same a Scott's. But my current insurer does have an online "control panel", so I'll give it a go when I'm ready.
Thanks all

Re: Transferring Insurance
So, it appears I am unable to declare my new vehicle SORN because they haven't yet received the paper registration document from the previous owner. And of course, I won't know when they do. Until I receive my new documents. Hope there's a period of grace for SORN/insurance
Brilliant system. All online - except the paper bit.
Great start

We're with Aviva(insured directly, not through a broker), online, and it's just login, a few mouse clicks, enter registration of replacement car (or any other change you want to make such as annual mileage, policy excess, change of job etc), get re-quote, accept or decline.
My wife changed car in the summer (from an ageing town runabout to a generally similar new town runabout) and there was no additional premium to pay. I changed my occupation and requested an increase to the next mileage threshold a couple of years ago and there was no fee to pay.

Re: Transferring Insurance
Done online. £30 fee. So clearly it depends who your insurer is.
At least it should be easy when I renew.
