Could it be that people who elect to permanently leave the UK for whatever reason are possibly predisposed to see the UK in an unfavourable light anyway?

Of course we have even amongst our enlightened membership here at least one pro-Remain Lemon who loved the EU so much that he moved to the continent that is the furthest away from the EU, and well before Brexit. So there is that.

OK, they could have been born overseas or be a relative through marriage. But chances are that if you have overseas relatives then they either made a conscious decision to leave the UK or else made a conscious decision to not return here having that right.

Personally I would take their call and tell them it is none of them damn business what the UK voters want.

OK, they could have been born overseas or be a relative through marriage. But chances are that if you have overseas relatives then they either made a conscious decision to leave the UK or else made a conscious decision to not return here having that right.

Personally I would take their call and tell them it is none of them damn business what the UK voters want.

I am a UK national. The relative I am talking of is a French cousin in law. His questions are friendly, not pointed. He is an English teacher in France, keen on all things British, and trying to make sense of what is going on here. His questions always assume there is some sense behind what the UK is up to, but that he doesn't understand it. This is what makes trying to explain some of the mess so painful. There is a limit to the number of times you can say "Because they are idiots"

I expect that's precisely why he finds it frustrating. The foreign relative is under the misapprehension that there must be something of substance by way of explanation.

Indeed, I find French politics to be inexplicable. Many people do not understand American politics. Everyone disapproves of Russian politics.

It is surely natural to be baffled by other cultures, and typically their politics follows from their culture and their values.

She was born in Australia.

Her parents were there on UK official business when she was born.
