I read somewhere that he got the idea from the Egyptians who had been using the calculation to build the pyramids. Maybe the Egyptians got the idea from the Babylonians, or vice-versa?

The Greeks were amazing. Hard to believe that Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the earth, thousands of years before people were being punished for suggesting it was round!

Pythagoras lead a sort of vegetarian cult, however beans were somewhat famously off the menu. Some claim that lead to his death.
