The Babylonians were using Pythagoras’ Theorem over 1,000 years before he was born....

I read somewhere that he got the idea from the Egyptians who had been using the calculation to build the pyramids. Maybe the Egyptians got the idea from the Babylonians, or vice-versa?

The Greeks were amazing. Hard to believe that Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the earth, thousands of years before people were being punished for suggesting it was round!

Steve

PS There's an old schoolboy joke somewhere about red indian squaws wanting to cross a river by riding a hippopotamus, where the sum of the squaws on the hippopotamus are equal to the sum of the squaws on the other two sides. 8-)

Pythagoras lead a sort of vegetarian cult, however beans were somewhat famously off the menu. Some claim that lead to his death.

A different legend reported by both Diogenes Laërtius and Iamblichus states that Pythagoras almost managed to escape, but that he came to a fava bean field and refused to run through it, since doing so would violate his teachings, so he stopped instead and was killed.

Presumably the hole in the ring pull makes them more holy.

You have to pay for your "indulgences". :D

Careful!

Look what happened when Martin Luther made a stand against the corruption of a culture that would sell indulgences!

Modern equivalent must be your Party donations. And the fees paid to lawyers.
