FTSE and big daily rises

#603166

Postby Gerry557 » July 19th, 2023, 10:23 am

My portfolio is "dark green" on my spreadsheet. This usually indicates a large rise as opposed to green showing a rise. Obviously we have good days and bad days (Dark red).

Having read articles about time in the market not timing and missing out on just the top ten biggest risers and how it affects your returns etc.

Where can I find the biggest FTSE days risers. There are articles that come up on google

https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/mar ... -rise.html

Im not saying this is a biggest day it might just be a normal good ish day but I would like to put it in context.

Any suggestions for charts or history that might help

Thanks all

I'm not trying to find individual shares but the dates when the index had big jumps.

Today was 2%+ but you can get much bigger jumps (and falls)

So if the question was, what were the 10 best days of 2022 or the last 12 month.

Where best to find the answer.

Look here:

https://uk.investing.com/indices/uk-100-historical-data

for the FTSE 100, or for the FTSE All-share:

https://uk.investing.com/indices/ftse-all-share-historical-data

Select the dates you wish to look at, download the data and paste into a spreadsheet...

Using the data listed here for the last 12 months of FTSE 100 prices (with a manual insertion of today's closing price of 7588.2) -

https://investing.thisismoney.co.uk/historic-prices/UKX?from=2022-07-18&to=2023-07-20

we can use Excel to then filter out the top-ten largest FTSE 100 single-day gains and losses, to get these two tables ranked in order of positive and negative percentage change -

Source - my own spreadsheet

As we can see from the left-hand table above, there's been 4 larger single-day gains for the FTSE 100 in the past 12 months than the 1.80% rise we've seen today...

Cheers,

Interesting that the falls generally seem to be a bit bigger than the rises. And yet, the index (having started at 6908j ended up (@ 7516) 8% higher over that 7 momth period. So the many more small daily changes carried more weight.

The phrase I recall was that markets ride an escalator up and an elevator down. :D

Reminds me of a bit of graffiti (a graffito to the pedants)

Wow that spreadsheet does the trick. I might steal that idea.

Actually it looks fairly restrained as I expected some bigger maximums.

I might go back and look at covid era as I'm sure there will be some bigger deltas

This is more like the info I was after

Thanks all

Well I suppose you can use the lows as buy signals and high as holds.

My "sick" recent top ups look like I'm a Warren Buffet of sorts now. Not that he would have bought the same shares. Still I've got a bigger yield going forward and a 10% rise.

Don't ask about the bigger picture but it highlights I'm no Warren Buffet. :D
