Bright planet
There is a very bright planet to the SSE moving slowly southwards.
I can only see it intermittently as there is some cloud here.
I think it is Jupiter but anyone confirm this?

No, I think it's Venus.
According to this website (http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/astronomy/nightsky/) , Venus is currently visible around that time in the southern sky, but Jupiter doesn't rise until the wee small hours.
Depending on exactly where you are looking it might be Mars, but that will obviously be much duller.

Re: Bright planet
mars is not too bright , and has a reddish tinge.
venus is the morning "star" .
so i think it is jupiter , which is seen in the southeast - with 3 moons.

Re: Bright planet
OK. Probably Venus from the linked website.
I was wrong about it moving southwards, it was moving westwards, like to the right, right.
Lost sight of it in the cloud and think it then set.
I am in Central London so only rarely see any stars but often the planets.
It was just this was particularly bright this evening.
I have got pictures of a wiggly white line on my phone, not a very steady hand these days.

Re: Bright planet
Venus is also the 'Evening Star' as well as the 'Morning Star'. This because its very bright due to it being nearer to the Sun than we are. Hence you see it when the Sun is just below the horizon.
All stars appear to revolve clockwise around the Pole Star (in northern hemisphere). because we on earth rotate in the opposite direction. If the 'star' in this case is near the southern horizon, it will appear to move westwards.

Re: Bright planet
I too saw a bright star yesterday, at about 10.00pm, and mused on what it was, whether a police helicopter or suchlike.
The one that I was looking at was due south, at about 40 degrees elevation and was a bright white

Here's a clue: if it had rotor blades, it was probabiy not Jupiter.

Re: Bright planet
No doubt. It is Venus. I have been watching it as well. By far the brightest light in the sky.
