Slim, Multi-position TV Wall Mount recommendations?

#22577

Postby Clariman » January 12th, 2017, 5:38 pm

Can anyone recommend a TV Wall Mount that has the following features, please?

  • Ability to pull out and turn TV at right angles to the wall (MANDATORY)
  • Slim - as unobtrusive as possible when viewing from the side (VERY IMPORTANT)
  • Sturdy - ability to support a TV of approx 42" (MANDATORY)
  • Easy to move about (VERY IMPORTANT)

I saw the following one in John Lewis which looks pretty good but costs £135 (includes 10% discount)
http://www.johnlewis.com/avf-jnl454-mul ... 5-/p587256

I can't find the same model anywhere else for less than £150.

Amazon has some really cheap ones. Here is an example at £17.99! Is this likely to be any good?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/TV-Stands-Wa ... 0080F22D0/

Should I give a cheap one a go and hope it works? Or just go for a more expensive one?

Thanks
Clariman

I'd try a cheap one to see if you can live with it.

Having a TV any higher than it would normally be on a TV stand isn't very ergonomic - they're that high for a reason. The top of the screen shouldn't be too much higher than eye level when viewing.

Sitting looking up at the telly will end up being uncomfortable.

(I'm presuming you're intending to put it at a typical "picture on the wall" height. If not, ignore this).

(I'm also presuming this is for domestic use, which may also not be the case).

Scott.

Thanks Swill. Good point.

We've never mounted a TV before - and may mount it quite low then. It is for in a kitchen where we have a small seating area and a dining area, so TV needs to turn at 90 degrees. Any reason not to mount it at normal screen height?

Only the risk of knocking it, I suspect.

If it's not in a position where people might catch it, then I don't see any problem.

Just a thought, you need to check arm lengths against screen width if you want the TV at right angles to the wall.

Many that I have seen do not open straight, but the plate the TV (or monitor for the ones I saw) swivels, so total length of arms had to be longer than monitor was wide to achieve right angles. If you see what I mean.

Also, what are you screwing into? I've seen ones mounted in the wrong place tear off the wall, in a meeting room.

I've got the lounge TV mounted on one of these

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00 ... UTF8&psc=1

42" TV. Only thing I changed was the supplied screws, which were (IIRC) about 4" long and I used some 8" ones I had which were also thicker. TV has been up for about 1 year now and the kids haven't managed to pull it off the wall (yet)

I'm intrigued about using 8" screws!
What is the construction of the wall?
Not many houses have walls of 8" thickness - interior walls are seldom more than single brick (or 4" stud) thickness +2 decorative finishes, making a total of about barely 5", external brick walls with cavity are only usually <5" thick (including internal finish) before you get to the cavity, timber frame walls thinner than that (and long screws can puncture the moisture barrier membrane).
Even if you had solid brick exterior walls, you would barely have any "spare" depth to avoid coming right through!
Was this some old cottage with foot thick stone walls?

It's on an external wall which is pretty thick (it is solid stone walls). I measured it first to ensure it wouldn't come out the other side.

Me too!

What did you use for wall plugs?

I used (IIRC) 4 rawl plugs which I threaded onto a long, thin wooden skewer and placed in the hole. The screw went in thru them all.

If I'm being honest I know it was overkill using such big screws, but about 15 years ago I bought a huge box of screws which came in all shapes and sizes (including some that are about 10 inches long). I rarely screw into the outside walls, but this seemed like a good opportunity to use them.

Take a look at Sanus mounts (www.sanus.com - easy to find in the UK) - I've got one supporting a 60" plasma TV (weighs a lot) and another support a lighter 40" monitor.

I found a good selection all from the same product line at The Range. e.g. fixed, tilt, tilt and turn etc.

We fitted an Invision wall mounted bracket to hold our 55inch TV. We bought this from Amazon for £26 and it will fit on either a brick wall or stud wall screwed into the vertical studding. We have it mounted at normal viewing height. It does all you require.

Whatever you do, do not get the Dixons "Knowhow" service to fit the TV bracket .... Mine came off the wall after a few months and smashed the TV... looking at the size of screws they used, I was amazed it stayed on the wall as long as it did. Use as robust fixing as you can as the pivot and weight of the TV puts a lot of strain on the fixing.
