I read this book a few years ago and am unable to remember the title or author. Can anyone help please?

It's set in the 1980s on the US west coast
The central character is a man, divorced, who lives in the hills above LA
He makes friends with the owner of the local donut shop
A neighbour is a 70s hippy guru
Another neighbour is a famous actor
There is an incident involving the rescue of a horse using a helicopter

Having now checked that book on Amazon, you are right!

What blocked me from finding it myself during my own search is that I thought I would recognise the author and title when I saw it. In fact I have no recollection of either and my first reaction on seeing your reply was that you had got it wrong! On reading the reviews I don't think I would choose it again, but it certainly stuck in my mind.
