Summary correction by moderators please

#489766

Postby Newroad » March 28th, 2022, 3:11 pm

Hi Mods.

I'd like to request that you empower yourself to summarily correct obvious typos in prominent positions in posts (mine included, of course, if and as needed). It may be just me, but it has grated constantly to see

"How much do you pend on fuel"

in the title of a post, then in the poll section of the same, seeing

"How much of your car runnung costs is fuel"

Today, we see

    "Wondows 11 Address Book"

Of course, if any or all of this is intended humour, please ignore me, but if not as I suspect, correcting it will both stop the annoyance for some and aid ease understanding (perhaps) for others.

Regards, Newroad

Another idea is to do this:

Note that anyone can alter the heading in subsequent replies, as I did above. So any replies to your OP can correct your spelling error, at least from that point on.

Indeed, Lootman.

However, that doesn't change how it appears in "New Posts" and similar.

Other than it being a bit irritating, is there a more substantive reason for your suggestion?

In the examples you cite, they look like simple typos but it is possible that a poster may he dyslexic, so having Mods constantly 'correcting' posts may do more harm than good.

I am wary about giving the volunteer mods team any additional work to do.

Hi Clariman.

Only the reasons stated earlier.

Please note, it is not a criticism of the original posters - as you say, they may be dyslexic or have a host of other reasons. It is simply about tidying up if and when it is very visible and assumes that it is fairly easy to do. The kind of examples I cite are infrequent.

A useful suggestion. There is a tweak that puts it right all the way through a topic/thread. I did find it once.

I think I know who the dyslexic (regular) posters are and don't attempt correction of their typos. Others I've corrected stealthily if the typo has grated on me and is completely obvious. C.

If I reply with quote I sometimes correct typos.
But I agree with Clariman that the mods probably have enough to do.

Those of use who are irritated by linguistics might do better to band together against radio presenters referring to 'train stations' :(

Fair points, but please will subsequent posters resist the temptation to continue the off-topic (for this board) comment. Thanks in advance (chas49)

Might I politely highlight that some here in our community also have issues such as OCD and autism spectrum. Typos, especially in headers, can be problematic (and I include missing punctuation such as "?")

I have previously pointed out the contrast between the Boards "Does Anybody Know?" and "How Do I Invest" (without success).

A polite reporting of a post to a moderator often works.

Hi Dealtn.

"Reporting" a post feels wrong, perhaps in the sense of being overkill, but if that were to become the moderators stated preference for this sort of thing, I would have no fundamental objection.

I see my request, if people were broadly in favour, of giving the moderators carte blanche to quietly help behind the scenes.

Worse than that, the ending of a statement with a question mark grates horribly?

Why do people do that.

You have of course borne in mind that, by their framing, some statements are also questions?
