Dark mode /alternative colours

#467431

Postby EverybodyKnows » December 19th, 2021, 10:38 pm

I often frequent this site in the evening and find the two colour variations available somewhat harsh on the eyes. A low contrast version or a dark mode would be a boon for me and perhaps others.

Have you tried changing from prosilver to BBOOTS under EverybodyKnows->User-Control-Panel->Board preferences->My board style?

It might not be any better though.

Not quite what you asked, and maybe you already know, but most devices (eg Windows PCs, Android phones, and I imagine Apple products) have options that automatically dim, or at least change the colour balance at night.

Failing my previous suggestion there is a database of styles here, one of which might suit you. It would require imploring stooz to add it to the site though. C.

BBOOTS isn't a dark mode though (at least not for me)

There's a prosilver dark https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/style/prosilver_dark/ which could be a complementary choice

Thanks for the suggestion, I have tried this previously and it does help slightly. What I do not understand is why the various devices I use cannot reduce their brightness sufficiently.

Yes - I have tried this, but they only dim down to 'inferno' which is still a smidge on the bright side for me. It is a good thought though.

I use F.lux.
Redshifts the screen in the evening. All sites, not only on the Lemon.

Blue light in the evening is bad for your sleep.

You might want to try the browser add-on DarkReader, available for most modern browsers. It automatically converts website themes to an appropriate dark mode at night time (using the original theme of each website as the basis), and you can tweak various darkness/contrast parameters somewhat according to preference or have certain sites always or never dark, on a site by site basis.

Dark Reader is the best five pounds I have spent in a long time. How have I not come across it before now!

Not only is the lemon fool easier on the eyes but so are so many other sites e.g. bbc news.

Thank you for recommending it :-)

Another thanks for the DarkReader recommendation.

It isn't perfect, for example the thank/quote buttons become quite hard to see, but is a huge improvement.
[Edit: Changing the theme mode to Filter+ works better for this site.]

A true dark mode skin would be highly appreciated.

f.lux just doesn't do the same thing at all.

You shouldn't need to spend anything. Browsers and indeed operating systems have supported setting your own palette since the 1990s. It'll be packaged alongside options like large print and text-to-speech in the assistive technology/accessibility options.

How strange. I don't find it at all harsh on the eyes.

The only thing I find annoying is that the warning that other posts have been made since I started typing mine is only visible after I have submitted my post.

I think the warning idea is great but it seems to only work patchily.

Meaning that sometimes I am notified prior to submitting that there is an intervening post, and sometimes I am not warned. I have not figured out or noticed why it works some times but not other other times. But I would prefer that it worked either 100% of the time or 0% of the time, rather than it be unpredictably hit and miss.

It might be a "racing hazard" scenario, that depends critically upon the moment of submission. I think the mechanism is not great because the way the intervening post is presented is not always CRYSTAL CLEAR to the poster what has (or rather hasn't) happened. C.

It cannot be otherwise. You are composing locally in your browser. There is NO interaction between your browser and the website until you press submit (or preview). So there is no possibility of a warning that someone else is typing or has posted.

Facebook can do it because they are using active content to constantly poll for updates. I for one, am very glad TLF doesn’t behave like that.
