Yep. Site is blisteringly quick for me too again now.

I'll report this post next, just to draw the attention of Team Mod to the thread.

Yes, I'd also say it was now quicker than usual! Strange!

If TLF is on a shared web server it seems to me there's some bad script running from time to time that's taking most server resources. Could be bad script on TLF or another cohosted website.

I agree again. Why are the owners not apologising at at least advising us what they are doing about it? They must read posts from time to time surely ?

Remember the owners set this up as a part-time hobby and a service to the ex Motley Fool community. It's not as if it's run by a company taking our subscription fees.
It's been good for the vast majority of the time, so I think we should cut them some slack at the moment, and thank them for all the time the site has run flawlessly

100 % agreed
Apologies for being irritated at the time.
I am over it now. :D

Which kind of confirms my suspicion that the random poor performance of TLF is likely a bad script out with TLF control. In the past, I had to move a website I ran onto it's own server due to issues by beyond my control. It costs a bit more but for a busy website is definitely worth doing. IMO of course.

Or alternatively move to a shared provider that has cpu/memory/io/processes limits, so no one site can swamp the server.

Thanks. That didn't exist when I was running websites. Often I found it was someone's half baked SQL scripting that was taking server resources and nothing to do with my website(s). Hosting companies have likely got smarter with their server configuration.

Hi all. We have been looking at the site slowness and speaking to the hosting providers.
Our apologies,l that some of you have been having issues.

We have been attempting to upgrade to a new server but we need to upgrade the software as well, and this has not yet gone successfully.
We will look into a retry this weekend.

As mentioned, this is just some by me and I have a full time job as well.

You have my sympathy. I used to voluntary do what you do. It's a thankless task at the best of times. Some of the abusive email and messages that I got from time to time were appalling. I hope you don't suffer the same from here. Good luck with the server migration.

I think it's pure coincidence that problems have been observed at "busy" times. They've certainly also occurred in the small hours of the early morning.

Scott.

Ok, so the support team are useless and currently asking me for times and what browser I was using... frankly unhelpful 2 days later...

I am attempting an upgrade. Its not a 1 button task. I have built a test site
THe O/S is not compatible with the boards, so I have to upgrade the boards in a new O?S and somehow switch to the new server but use the same domain. Some tech folk will say thats easy in a DNS change, but this hosting does not have that access as a shared site.

Then there are the add ons that are not compatible with the new version that I then have to get alternatives for - one of which is the thanks system and others we use are no longer patched to be cpmpatible!
Once we move, then I have to upgrade again as the next version is already replaceable with more recent versions....

For info, the server we are on shares over 1000 domains, not just those listed above. It's a full cloud system, and if one gets DDOSed or hacked, it can effect us all.
So once all the above is done, I can then move us to a dedicated server and even look for alternate suppliers. The downside is I need it to be managed as we don't have the skills or time to manage the server as well. And these are not cheap!

As you can imagine this isn't a quick fix but we are working on it!

I hope you know how much your work is appreciated, even if we rarely express it. Speaking personally, TLF came as a life saver following the sad demise of TMF, and it was a bit like having one's local pub threatened with closure and then saved at the last minute.

My life would be poorer without TLF, and it's only at times like this that I realise, slightly ashamedly, just how much I take such an excellent - and free - service for granted.

I'd be more than happy to chip in financially if that would help, as I'm sure others would.
