Opening a new cash ISA

Must this always be done using a subscription of cash?

Or are there providers that allow it to be done by transfer in from an existing ISA (thus allowing it to be opened without a subscription in the current tax year)?

The website I was hinting at (it's Martin Lewis's one) says:

You can also transfer an ISA without paying any new money in.

We note in all our top picks below whether an ISA allows transfers into it.

This implies that alI ISAs which accept transfers can be opened with only a transfer. Of course, you would have the check the specifics on any one you fancied opening.

many...probably most ISA providers that accept transfers in will open with a 'NIL' balance

then the next stage on application is '''funding the ISA'

there is where you enter how it will be funded.....in your case...'by transfer from.....'

Thanks. So when they demand a minimum deposit of, say, £100 they are happy that that be by transfer rather than subscription?

I must have been unlucky over the past few years: all the ones I happened to investigate demanded a subscription to open and then welcomed transfers in.

I need to try again, it seems.

in the ISAs I have done this way I have never been asked for minimum deposit...but I think your guess is correct

imo...go ahead with your chosen provider and see what happens when you open but no subscription then transfer in from....

Maximums, no further deposits after the initial one, but not a mandatory sum

Why not? Minimum account balances are surely quite usual in savings accounts - to get the stated interest rate. Nothing particular to ISAs.
