Ringing 159

I had reason to ring the fraud hotline (159) today and have to say I was impressed by the response. I had received an email overnight from my bank stating that they had received my request to close my account and transfer my DD payment details to another bank. At first I thought it was a scam but the wording and email did look genuine so I checked the email source code and the source IP address did belong to the bank. I called the bank but there was a 30 minute queue so I tried 159. The call was answered by my bank within seconds and the agent confirmed my suspicions. Looks like an email in a 'test environment' had broken through to the live banking system, as they had numerous reports of the email being received. Good result !

Oh dear...

Could have been worse - your experience reminds me of this similar gaffe from many years ago:

Enjoy!

I particularly liked: "The little UK firm responsible for the gaffe received a complaint from a potential customer who felt himself qualified to be a rich bastard yet had not received the letter he deemed appropriate to his station in life."
