Give us a 5 star rating

#620386

Postby terminal7 » October 13th, 2023, 12:57 pm

A few weeks ago bought an electrical appliance through one of the usual platforms. Not entirely happy with the product and wrote to the supplier explaining my concern and said that I was thinking of returning item. In the end I decided to keep the item. Now I receive a postcard (yes remember them) through the post from the supplier basically stating that if I give the item a 5 star rating I would receive a £20 gift voucher for the site.

Sounds like corruption and/or bribery. Trading Standards?

I would give them a one star rating, explaining this postcard as the reason!

Does the site allow you to amend reviews? If so, give them 5 stars, get the voucher, then amend it to reflect what you really think.

Does the site allow you to post exactly what was on the postcard?

It's more common than you may realise. At least 10% of Amazon customers according to a recent Times article (which is firewalled unfortunately)

I was looking at a product's predominantly glowing reviews on a website yesterday and it soon became apparent that a significant number of reviewers referred to having "bought the product on a promotion" with that information often just tagged on to the end of the review.
It made me suspicious that it was code for "I blagged this free in return for a good review".

Non-paywalled version here

I have had a similar offering a refund of £4 (I think) from a marketplace vendor to withdrawing a negative review about sending a book through the post packed just in a thin grey plastic bag. I refused and let the review stand, but it soon got lost with the number of more recent reviews.

I vaguely remember a website that can analyse reviews and calculate the probability of them being false. Anyone remember?

What I like about Amazon is the list of reviews including those from other countries. I always pay attention to what the Germans say! ;)
