This story caught my attention. RWE Innogy put forward a plan, approved by the National Trust who own the Conwy river and waterfalls, to detroy that fall by diverting the water through a hydro scheme. A very small hydro scheme generating about as much power as one offshore wind turbine, so very insignificant, just under 5 megawatts (quoted in the article). The article also makes the claim that the economics of the scheme were boosted by subsidy farming. Furthermore the Welsh Government was planning to remove the main environmental protection governing National Parks (quote from article) presumably to encourage other such schemes.

The main point of the newspaper article is that this scheme has been successfully opposed, but I worry that it shows that the National Trust and the Welsh Govt are not responsible custodians of the UK's natural environment.
