P55 form

#426929

Postby xxd09 » July 12th, 2021, 9:52 am

Just an informative note
My online P55 form for a tax refund took from 13th May to 12th July this year
I wrote to HMRC on 26th June to query delay
Usually takes 1 month
Covid?

I've had the experience of submitting P55 forms online on 3 occasions in the past year or so....

Last June it took 3 weeks for the tax to be refunded into my account.
My wife's submission in the September took 8 days. I thought that was amazing!!

However, I submitted my next one 28.4.21 and received the refund 2.7.21

My wife's was similar, 15/06 to 19/08, just over 2 months.

Better service from HMRC this year. Just under 4 weeks from submitting online P55 to receiving tax refund in bank account.

Daft question but that’s where I am. The P55 I’ve found on gov.Uk asks questions under a title of 2022/2023. But I’m guessing you are all talking about getting refunds in respect of tax deductions in 2021/2022. Does one claim the prior year overpaid tax annually in April/May? Thanks in anticipation.

It's for the current tax year. For example if you make a big SIPP drawdown early on, you'll get over-taxed. If you tell them via the P55 that you're not going to have any more income this tax year, they give you it back straight away (well within a few weeks anyway).

Don’t count on early receipt of overpaid tax
This years refund still not paid to me -will take 3 months at least!

Seems in April they were managing to turn it around in 4 weeks, but by May that had more than doubled.

(I reported a 4 week response above, that was actually for my wife in April. My own one went in on 31st May and not paid yet.)

Likewise, sent online application on 2 July, tracking on the website suggested settlement on the 23rd! Spoke to them yesterday now promising the 8th September! This is getting unreliable so I may in future just wait to do self assessment so I'm not short of a few grand that is planned to arrive.

Still not got mine after submission on 1st June. Phoned 3 times, the first 2 calls assured me they would escalate it and deal with it straight away.

Latest call said it still hasn't been looked at and there is a large backlog and they've stopped giving out estimates of when it will be dealt with. Other than waiting, the only option is to raise a complaint.

I wondered if anybody has updates on what's happening with P55 tax refunds?

I replied to this thread back in summer '21 mentioning two of mine took 8 days & 3 weeks respectively to receive the tax refund from HRMC.

My latest P55 was sent 28.7.22. Looking at some of the recent replies here, seems like there's still quite a wait.

I sent mine off in early May and within a week I received my calculations and payment. Maybe the department had a change of personnel? I don't know but you should have received it by now.

What's the best way of chasing it up?
Is there a delegated telephone number to a specific department that would handle these matters?
Alternatively, is there a web chat or an email address I could use?
