Mrs MP is a couple of years short of class 3 contributions to get to her maximum state pension in a couple of years. The arithmetic suggests that it’s a no brainer to make the contributions.
I’m trying to work out how to submit the payment. The web site says I need to quote an 18 digit reference number which I can find “on her bill.” She hasn’t got a bill though. Does anyone know how to proceed?
Thanks
MP

My wife rang them up when she wanted to make some voluntary payments and they (re-)calculated the figures there and then and gave her the reference number to quote.

Re: Voluntary Class 3 NI payments
I rang HMRC, told them what I wanted to do ( buy class 3 for tax year 20-21) and the very helpful HMRC lady gave me a unique 18 digit code. I then logged onto my bank account and paid the bill quoting the 18 digit code. A couple of weeks later , the year was added and visible on the government gateway.

I noted from the website that they are not accepting cheques at the moment.

The code remains valid for subsequent years, so that you can just use it to pay for the previous year ( you can't pay this way in-year ) . With luck HMRC will allocate it to the previous year with nothing else from you, which is what happened to my FY20 payment. Without luck, it will sit in suspense until you phone them up and ask them to allocate it, which is what happened to my FY21 payment.
