Re: The Beer You Are Drinking Right Now
Coincidentally... before it was mentioned here....
I can't remember the last bottle of Newcy Brown I had. TBH, I am not even sure I ever had one. So the other day in the supermarket I slipped one in the trolley.

The suspense is killing me. How did it go?
My experience of Newcy Brown was as a student (late 1960s), when most other beers seemed to be fizzy keg. It was way too sweet for my tastes (but then, I still don't really like sweet things in general). It might have been just a popular delusion that made softy southerners think it made people inclined to fight. Then again, it might not?

It makes a good shandy.
Bit smoother than Guinness shandy.
As you say, it has the additional health benefit of needing no added sugar.

In a local micropub possibly the best pint of Proper Job I have ever had. Also Shivering Sands Ribersborg Stout. Stunning

Is that what we used to call nooky brown? Tried that once in a bottled version, didn't like it.

Nowt wrong with that. Well, some wines more than others. Tonight's wine - a portuguese white whose red stablemate is very nice - was rather a disappointment. OK, but distinctly uninspiring.

In my revolting student days (Brum), we'd have understood it as Newky. As a tactical deterrent, though, Nukey might have scared the Russians more effectively.

Many, many moons ago when I was living in Australia, I chanced upon a bottle shop that was advertising that they had a few bottles of Newky Broon. Starved of ale of any kind, I asked for two bottles, which were at an eye watering price. The assistant reached behind him and retrieved the two bottles from their storage place - a typical Aussie beer fridge held at 3 degrees. I drank the first almost immediately and it was ghastly. Took about two weeks sitting in the sun* to get the other up to a drinkable temperature.

*the beer that is.

I've always thought it was best served cold. There was a gimmicky label redesign with temperature sensitive inks to show the bottle was cold. The grey star changed to blue at serving temperature.

Newky Brown not to my taste.
Today. Burning Sky Aurora 5.6% an old favourite, sublime.
Kent brewery Tech Noir American porter, dark and dangerous, 6.1%
Cask all the way for me.

Re: The Beer You Are Drinking Right Now
So the have the Newcy/Newky/Nooky Brown on the go.
Not too much carbonation, which is a good thing, given it would be artificial fizz, Smoothish. Hint of sweetness, slightly metallic - but neither striking Must admit I don't get "the one and only" feeling.
Probably following up with a bottle of Twist and Shout which will knock it out the water.

Breweries come and go with alarming rapidity. I still miss the Wooden Hand. And I hear mixed reports of the revival of Skinners under its new owners, but have yet to encounter Betty Stogs in a pub or even a bottle since the original closure.

I note that Leffe Blonde is now brewed under licence in the UK, at a lower strength and apparently a much inferior taste.
Be careful out there, read the small print on the bottle!

Re: The Beer You Are Drinking Right Now
I remember when Stroud Brewery bought Alton Court Brewery of Ross-on-Wye in the early 50s. If anything, Stroud was worse than Alton Court. Both ranked about level with George's from Bristol. Our favourite was Ansells brewed by Lloyd and Yorath and delivered by a Sentinel Steam lorry.
I once had the misfortune to call at a pub owned by Garnes Burford Ales. Not a pleasant experience. Mind you, we had been to Brize Norton where the USAF had an open day. My first taste of American beer. Miller's High Life and Schlitz's, the beer that made Milwaukee famous. The Sergeant's mess bar had a long. Cupboard with tin baths full of ice and shelves full of cans of beer. That was a not to be forgotten experience.
So many of those vanished beers were really mercy killings. Then came Flower's Keg.

"Brewed under licence" is a really funny way to spell counterfeited
If it helps you can learn to read the barcode

Talk of awful beer from yesteryear makes me think of Allbright. The only good thing about it was that it was difficult to get drunk on.

Bety Stoggs was on at the New Inn, Canterbury last week. It is now on at The Berry, Deal.

As a beer lover I can't say I feel sad about the loss of this list of dreadfully boring beers. Sorry, can't say I've tasted all of them as you don't get Banks's or Mansfield round here, but Eagle IPA and some of the others were truly awful and they used to make me sad that I'd wasted money on them!! Love the faux outrage from CAMRA. Tbh I thought Eagle IPA had already disappeared because I haven't seen it served in Charles Wells backyard at Bedford Rugby club for over a year.

You can get an idea of where a beer gets to by looking at Untappd reviews, although it relies on the tickers doing their thing which may be less likely for a beer like Betty that may be perceived as less exciting. Still, it's been ticked in Watford, Chelmsford and Canterbury this month, as well as in its homeland :

Had nothing to do with Charles Wells since 2017 though, since they sold the old brewery and most of the brands to Marston for £55m, which allowed them a clean slate and the funds to build a modern, smaller brewery just to service their own pubs.
It's not that surprising given the way Carlsberg have been gutting Marstons since the takeover. The only one I'm a bit surprised by was 61 Deep which was actually a pretty decent "modern cask" beer.
