Variant or mutant martinis

Can anyone explain why what I assume to be relatively new cocktails, such as an expresso martini or a passion fruit martini, are called a martini? Is it simply because they are served in martini glasses? There seems to be no other connexion, not even in the strength of alcohol.

Passion fruit martini? I guess you mean a Porn star martini https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porn_star_martini :D

No, I've never had one but looked it up recently 'cos someone on some TV show or another ordered one and I wondered wots-that ... and, yes, like you, my immediate reaction was errr but where's the vermouth? As the Wiki page says:

"It is not a true martini, but is one of many drinks that incorporate the term into their names."

"Total variations

Sometimes the term "martini" is used to refer to other mostly-hard-liquor cocktails such as Manhattan, Cosmopolitan, and ad hoc or local concoctions whose only commonality with the drink is the cocktail glass in which they are served. Chefs with a more whimsical bent are even producing dessert martinis which are not a drink at all, but are merely served in martini glasses.

Some newer drinks include the word "martini" or the suffix "-tini" in the name (e.g., appletini, peach martini, chocolate martini, breakfast martini). These are so named because they are served in a cocktail glass. Generally containing vodka, they share little in common with the martini.

Another popular form is the espresso martini, popular in restaurants as a dessert. Many variations exist but most involve shaking an espresso shot with the ingredients and served in a chilled martini glass. By shaking a fresh espresso shot it creates a hard layer of crema which is garnished with three coffee beans in the centre.
