Surely the beer and cider sector has got this number well covered? "A pint of Satan's Spew, landlord. Or shall I go for the Dog's Breath instead?"

For some indefinable reason, I was never tempted to try the Cripple Cock scrumpy. A former girlfriend held up a glass of some such murky beverage to the light, peered at it closely for a while, and finally gave her verdict. "Gaah, moi luvver, that 'orse'll never run again."

Then there was the time in southern France when we were in a village shop, trying to buy a few things for lunch. The shop had very little stock, and it wasn't a very promising experience until an old guy came in and asked the wrinkled old crone behind the counter for "une bouteille de Huit." And she shuffled off to the locked drinks store to go and fetch it.

We were so fascinated that we decided to stick around, rather than taking the opportunity to escape the shop without having to buy anything. . What sort of a drink might be called an Eight? Was the magic number an indicator of its strength? Or the number of glasses one might expect to drink before one passed out? (And what would happen After Eight?)

After fully five minutes, she reappeared. Clutching a bottle whose label declared it, in English, to be white spirit.

But more generally, this begs the question of what counts as a silly name. There are so many candidates you could argue either way.

And bringing the above two posts together, the French name for dandelion is pissenlit (piss-en-lit, piss in bed), presumably due to the plant’s diuretic properties.

I had a Crafty Shag at a beer festival once. I am not sure I would want to walk up to a bar and ask for A Punch In The Face. Yellow Snow doesn't appeal to me either.

The good news, I'm passing close to there on Tuesday. The tragic news, I can't stop for a pint and AFAIK they don't bottle it. Oh well, there'll always be another day.

Bumble Hole, apparently, is a nature reserve on a site that was once noted not for the sound of bees, but the ear-battering rumble of 19th century metal-bashing. It's near where they made the anchor for the Titanic. Fat lot of use that turned out to be.

My great grandfather was a village blacksmith in Northamptonshire, and he used to head over to Dudley and Halesowen whenever business at home was slack. Making chains for the big shipping companies. Not exactly stimulating work for a skilled craftsman, but it kept the family fed. I expect the beer was okay, though?

Although Vergina is now in Greece, it is where Philip of Macedon is buried. I visited a few years ago. Very impressive site.
