Where to ask about bottoms!?

#290582

Postby Bhoddhisatva » March 13th, 2020, 5:52 pm

Don’t panic!
Nothing smutty matron ... honest.

I want to know where to ask a question as a new topic on the issue of identifying when the market is near or at a bottom.

I know conventional Foolish logic is not to try and time the markets but ... if one is lucky enough to have cash at hand it is a really tricky time deciding when to commit.

I’d like to discuss possible leading indicators for a bottom or upturn.

Can’t see an obvious home folder for such a debate?

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Can't see a wonderful fit of any board but maybe Technical Analysis or Macro and Global Topics wouldn't be totally off the mark?

I was once told "Never buy on a rising market nor sell on a falling market". Not infallible, of course.

It has been said that it is at the time of maximum panic that the market is likely to turn. Miners had a good turn up today, over 10% for RIO, BHP and S32 in my lot. On the other hand the caterers are looking a bit sad, like their cakes.

I'll let you know.

yep, will be dribbling some hard-earned cash into VUKE and VWRL next week. (HSDL cheap dealing - I've 'lost' a five figure sum in a few weeks so may as well save £9 a trade :D )

Perhaps we need a Market Proctologist's board?

You are correct that there is no obvious fit but there are related threads running.

On "How do I invest"

viewtopic.php?f=88&t=22024

"Investment Strategies"

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=19499

and as you suggest

"Macro and Global Topics"

So starting a thread on any of those would be fine.

Not sure about where to ask about bottoms, but I know who to ask about bottoms, at least judging by the evidence from the High Court in Edinburgh this week.

The thing about market-bottoms is that they really are only visible in the rear-view mirror....

You can't see them coming, and you can't see them whilst you're 'in' them..

On a slightly different note, the 'pursuit' of a 'market bottom' can lead to investor-paralysis, so I think it's going to be helpful if you try to think of this in a different way...

You don't 'have to' pull a 100%-investment trigger during the precise 'market bottom' phase for you to achieve good investment outcomes on a multi-year horizon....

Drip-feeding into these types of markets will often eventually lead to good results, but it's difficult to judge when we don't know what your investment-horizons are in terms of how quickly you expect to have to make any good returns...

If you expect to have to make capital gains in a short time-frame, then your window of opportunity is likely to be much smaller to get things absolutely right, but if you've got a long investment lifetime ahead of you then 30% drops in markets are something to perhaps start to drip-feed into and take advantage of..

'Stick to collectives' would be my bigger bit of advice though, rather than worrying too much about hitting the exact bottom of a particular cycle....

Cheers,

Itsallaguess
