TLF is announcing that the Polite Discussions board will not be re-opened. However, we will be opening a new board called Current Affairs & News (CAN). It will be the only place on TLF where politics can be discussed. More details below

Current Affairs & News (CAN)

Board Guidelines
A forum to discuss current affairs and news – with the emphasis being on current. The content can be opinion or factual, moral or political, but it must be topical, and it must always remain polite. The board is not a ‘free for all’ – the site’s normal rules of behaviour apply here. Please reacquaint yourself with them https://lemonfool.co.uk/app.php/rules

Further Guidance
  • Any discussion that gets mired in entrenched positions is likely to be locked
  • Unlike Polite Discussions, it will be a public board visible to all. This is easier to manage but brings with it a responsibility for everyone to adhere the rules
  • It will be tightly moderated - any post that attacks another person (as opposed to their opinion or words) will be deleted or edited.
  • Political posts will not be allowed on other boards and will be deleted or moved to CAN

We look forward to this being a positive addition to the site. It should appear within the next few days.

Is there any way to mute this board?

It's already the same old same old, and the site is much better without it IMO.

Why on earth can you not just ignore it? That is what I do with every board that doesn't interest me, which is most of them.

There does not seem to be a hide topic feature in the forum, which us a big weakness of it.

Igoring needs mental effort.

Bookmark the threads/topics you're interested in; don't bookmark the ones you're not interested in; use ucp.php?i=ucp_main&mode=bookmarks as the 'entry point' for your TLF reading. Also subscribe to all the boards/forums where threads/topics you're interested in might reasonably plausibly appear, but turn the "Someone replies to a topic to which you are subscribed" notification option off and the "Someone creates a topic in a forum to which you are subscribed" notification option on.

Net result: New threads/topics you might be interested in cause you to be notified. When you receive such a notification, click on it and decide whether you actually are interested - if so, bookmark the thread/topic; if not, do nothing and you won't encounter it again unless something specifically draws it to your attention - i.e. the thread/topic basically becomes 'hidden'. If you decide you're interested and then later decide you're no longer interested, unbookmark the thread/topic to 'hide' it. And if you decide that you're not interested in anything that appears in a particular board/forum, unsubscribe it to 'hide' it to the extent that you won't even be notified of new threads/topics on it.

phpBB isn't by any means a perfect piece of discussion board software, but it is quite flexible. One usually just has to find the right way to flex it - which may well not be at all obvious!

Yeah, all that running around after Frankenstein, finding dead bodies to reanimate, gurgling insanely at the lightning...

It's not like it's a naked <insert person of your desire>. You are allowed to avert your eyes!

But will Google [Bot] and Google Adsense [Bot] avert their eyes?

A good point, well made. I'll see what the powers that be have to say. I know they are not keen on any kind of trouble or anything that might upset that, er, stream. C.
