Just wanted to add my voice to the suggestion of a board focused on decumulation. I’d also agree that this is distinct from Pensions Practical Problems. Would also be worthwhile making a distinction between the aspects of FIRE which are about accumulating, achieving FIRE and stepping over the edge from the practical aspects of drawdown when you’re across on the other side.

So if I may summarise the disucussion as I underand it so far:

1. Most people seem to agree that those wishing to discuss decumulation issues are not as well served as those who are interested in accumulation.

2. Decumulation stategies and issues are sufficiently different to those of accumulation before retirement to have a dedicated place in which to discuss them.

3. Because accumulation in retirement is also something that happens (be it either as part of re-balancing or incporporating new income etc.) that has to be taken into consideration too. So it's not just decumulation that's the issue.

4. Since Pension Freedoms legislation in 2014, and the passing of FS pensions and annuities, decumulation is likely to become more relevant to more people over time.

I think the main proposal so far is to split out the "FIRE" topic of "Retirement Investing (inc FIRE)" into a separate board and have rename the current retirement board to be spcifically about both accumulation and decumulation in retirement.

This would leave other boards for investing youths to address pre-retirement accumulation topics of various flavours (FIRE, HYP, passive, technical, other...).

As I see it, the proposal would be to have two boards, Investing prior to retirement and Investing when retired.

I think those titles are more appropriate than Accumulation and Decumulation, the latter being an awkward word which does not adequately express the processes of taking income naturally, as some or all of the dividend income, and that of gradually releasing capital from the portfolio. An annuity would follow the latter route, by having maturities at phased times, hopefully with the last date after the anticipated life expectancy has been achieved. Swings and roundabouts ensure that an annuity provider can cater for a proportion of extended lifetimes. An individual does not have this luxury.

"Retirement Investing - Harvesting Income"?

Well, it would be two "boards" in effect, but in practice it would be one board for people who have built their retirement investments and are now retired and wish to discuss the issues relating that situation. And all the other boards that already exist for amassing the aforesaid assets (whether for retirement or not). So I might choose a HYP strategy for my retirement accumulation and so frequent that board until I hit the retirement button, while you might choose a different method and read the mechanical, property, trading, passive, etc. boards until you do the same flip.

I agree that "decululation" is perhaps a bit of a bad word for it. "Post-Retirement Income"?

How about two boards (the first formed from the existing one)?

Investing for Retirement
Post Retirement Investing
