Quote depth
I am unsure whether I am imagining this or not but a new point seems to have come up with the updated site: Quoting depth
It has been the case for a while that when posting a reply to a post that quotes another post, that itself quotes another post, that in turn quotes another etc. The innermost levels of quoted posts are automatically dropped. I have not previously found this a problem - as one usually prunes quoting levels in replies - but currently this seems to be have started to become an issue sometimes, as I find the immediately quoted post can drop out too many levels that I would have expected to remain and indeed might even require in order to effectively reply to the quoted post.
The chop seems to happen at more than three levels of quoting. Is this a new policy or just oversight? Or was it ever thus? - though I never found it an issue previously.
I have also noticed the apparently recent introduction of "Today" and "Yesterday" on posting dates.
TIA

Re: Quote depth
I think there is much unnecessary quoting
I don't need to quote here as it's quite clear what this relates to
I'm sure we have all come across multi quoting on some posts and lost the will to read on
just my tuppence worth
PS I do realise this was not the point raised but only quoting where useful would help

Re: Quote depth
...I agree too many quoting levels are usually unnecessary and may be confusing and indeed I usually carefully prune back such posts when quoting (which is IMO required to address particular points in order and helps make things clear) where the included quotes are either too long or unnecessary.
But, recently I came across a post where, IMV, needed quotes were dropped. This is the first time I have encountered this AFAIK and so wonder if anything has been changed in his area.

Re: Quote depth
Quoting depth was always 3 but we have changed it to 5.
The dates have been modernised to include recent language.
Eg 'a few minutes ago'

The auto-chop was always at 3 levels, as far as I am aware. Seems about right to me.

OK, thanks!
How odd, this never seemed to cause me problems in the past. Possibly an unusually structured post?

Can I just say that personally I don't think that has helped?
It's led to much bigger chunks of quoted text, whereas before I thought the depth of 3 was about right.
Scott.

That's perplexing. I always thought three levels was one too many. Anyone actually following a thread only really needs the post to which the post they are reading is responding, IMO.

And not necessarily all of that post, just the relevant part.
