Yes I suppose by the very fact that he took great care to remain largely anonymous¹ we know what he would want, and that I suppose trumps what anyone else wants, even after death, probably including his family.

Personally, I don’t feel it is right to out anyone. He knew I knew who he was and sent me a personal message as he was rightly concerned about privacy. I found out by accident when researching a small company in which he had a notifiable interest and his real name was disclosed in RNS holding announcements. I happened to have a technical book by an author of the same name.

As I say, I feel the decision should be up to the family, certainly not any poster here (one way or the other).

I must say I'm curious as to how his real name being in an RNS lead you to make the link to his TMF/TLF name, but I suppose if you explained that'd give the game away, so best we leave it at that, before interests are piqued further!

It was a very small AIM company and he owned 5 or 6% IIRC at the time. He was active on an otherwise quiet ADVFN thread I read through, as well as on TMF discussions about the company. in those days he used to sign off with his real first name. His old TMF profile gave the game away. I’m not a stalker. It was easy to join the dots. I never met him but it was clear he greatly prized his privacy and I suspect he would not like to be outed. I have no intention of doing so.

I’m still a bit stunned by the news. It’s like your worst nightmare. All those plans you have… It must be so shocking for his friends and family. My heart goes out to them.

That's quite a shock. He was one of a kind. When he wrote something (usually at great length) about finance, logic or mathematics, it was a safe bet* to simply assume he was correct. Couldn't really say that about too many other posters.


*Though were he here, he'd probably patiently remind me of the 1.4% of times he recalled being incorrect, and would caution me on the casual assumptions of my gamble.

This is a tragedy. He was one of the most prolific and useful posters, both on TMF and here. Among other things, he was assiduous in keeping up to date some of the HYP portfolios. I doubt that anyone else has the information needed to carry on his work.

I have a feeling that I may have met him at a meeting in Cambridge, when I gave a talk about my HYP experience.

He will be missed.

Yes, I often didn't finish reading all the way through a post. They were a bit like reference works which you might go back to and look up when the need arose.

What dreadfully sad news. I'm gutted to hear about this. Gengulphus was one of our best ever posters, both here on TLF and TMF too.

I shall miss his eloquent posts. I've learnt a lot from him over the many years I've 'known' him.

I am sorry that for some reason I have not come across this thread until now. I am really quite shocked. I noticed that his posts had dropped off a bit in frequency recently but did not think much of it. I did not always manage to get to the end of his posts and I did not think that they were always ideal for this sort of forum but anyone could learn a great deal from him and I hope we all did. Life is so sh***y sometimes. Rather puts Boris’s behaviour into perspective.

If his family get to read this thread they will know that he was held in the highest regard and I would like my condolences to be added to those already posted.

That's realy sad. I started on TMF back in 2001, his posts were always the first ones I read even if they were sometimes beyond me. Indeed, RIP.
