Very sad news, I took his advice for my HYP Portfolio which has turned out to be great for me. I enjoyed his posts on the MF boards, & more recent posts here at the LF,

What sad news. I only heard about it through the link on HYP, so thank you for posting that.

I have learned so much over the years through his detailed and well researched posts, first on MF and then continuing here.

I also wanted to add my condolences and pay tribute to a great poster who will be very much missed. His posts on the old Motley Fool site were very influential in getting me to invest in the first place and he was kind enough to answer questions with - I thought - remarkable patience and thoroughness. RIP.

I've been re-reading this pm a few discussions I've participated in with Gengulphus. Most impressive was his seemingly off the cuff riff on HYP1 last year which turned it into an "accumulation" version by applying a very simple idea and some easy(ish) to understand maths, yet which generated some exceedingly interesting and useful results. I will certainly miss his insight.

A shocking hammer blow to this community - such an exceptional person in many ways. My condolences to his family.

I joined TMF around 2010 when I decided to start managing my own and my wife’s personal pensions via SIPPs.

I picked up lots of useful snippets along the way and can still remember very early on requesting Gengulphus to select a HYP portfolio around that date.

You can imagine my astonishment when he responded with a very detailed post with the selections and reasons for doing so.

You could tell from his posts that he was one seriously intelligent, analytical and logical person.

So it does not surprise me to now learn of his past career in pioneering technology, broadly without specifics.

I echo the sentiments of others about respecting his wishes for these details to remain private and pay my respects to the many he has helped along their own financial journeys.

So sad. He was a generous and valued contributor to these boards and taught me a great deal. Like others I’d noticed that he wasn’t posting so often but thought nothing of it. His analyses were penetrating and clear and well founded. He will be much missed. RIP.

I would like to add my condolences to his family.

I hope they get to read this thread, with all the fond memories of, and tributes to G.

I still have his algorithm for when to top up HYP shares on my computer!

To echo all above, this is very sad news.

I sent a number of private messages to Gengulphus over the years on TLF and he was always gracious in his replies, never giving advice, but pointing out things to me that would allow me to make a better decision.

I remember with fondness being pulled up on a post I had made where I had been inaccurate in what I had stated - and he was right!

I have no idea who he was and don’t really have any desire to know - what I know is that he helped me a lot and always had time to reply and that is enough.

Yes, my condolences to family and all who knew him.

Gengulphus....gosh this is a complete shock. Only saw this forum by chance this morning. A stalwart of these boards and the most knowledgeable person on so many subjects. His style was so different from many on these boards that you had to stop and marvel at the effort and time that he put into his posts. Nothing seemed to much trouble for him. I recently arranged an obituary for a former colleague in the DT, I hope he gets something similar.

He will be missed.

I had little to do with Gengulphus directly either on TLF ot TMF. I always enjoyed reading his immaculately composed posts and whenever he did reply to me he was polite to a fault. He also had a great grasp of investing and there was very little he wrote that I ever disagreed with.

The board Gengulphus used which I read most was the Games and Puzzles board here on TLF. His answers to puzzles were awe inspiring: I have always loved maths and studied it well into my undergraduate course but it was clear his grasp of maths was a couple of orders of magnitude beyond me.
Would love to have met him in person and played a game of backgammon, chess or igo with him, so sorry to have lost a great contributor to this community far too early.

Terribly sorry to hear of the loss of Gengulphus.

I have followed his comments and the High Yield Strategy back to TMF Days, and have learnt and considered a great deal from his wise words and counsel.

I would also like to add my condolences to the Friends and Family of Gengulphus, if they should find us all here someday.

I joined TMF in c. 1999 and remember the name Gengulphus for the simple reason that it had figured in P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster.

Not a name to forget. He was a very good teacher!

Deeply shocking news, as it always is when such a fine mind is snuffed out before its time. We all owe a great debt to his penetrating analysis on many topics. It simply won't be the same without him here.

How very sad. I have been lurking about for the last 11 years and although i found some of his posts difficult to follow, I did appreciate the time and effort he must have put into them. RIP Gengulphus.

Likewise. He was head and shoulders ahead of other regulars there, including you and me, in his mathematical insights.

I'm pretty sure I did meet him in person, and played backgammon and possibly phutball. Back when I too considered myself a mathematician and frequented the same common room.

Very sad indeed to see him go.
