ad blocker pop up thing

#609031

Postby didds » August 14th, 2023, 10:05 pm

Im not running an ad blocker.

but this site tonight has started throwing up "turn off your ad blocker" messages that prevent easy access.

Ive cleared cache etc. No change.

Why is this suddenly happening?

I am running one, Privacy Badger, but no warning or ads. It's "technically" a tracker blocker. I find the idea of being tracked all over the place creepy.

I'm sorry about this but it is something that google has imposed on us. Stooz is looking for a workaround.

As I posted previously, not only do I see the popup, but it sabotaged the settings on my AdblockPlus.
So I had to uninstall Adblock and reallow all the safe sites... then I decided not to reinstall and instead try Privacy Badger.

Now the popup appears with minimal frequency, and when I'm in LSE that annoying woman does not keep appearing, so.. so far so good.

Thankyou.

Indeed it is a free world ... and a free site. But it isn't free to run. We rely on ad revenue and voluntary subs to run the site, which means we are a little beholden to Google's policies as are many other sites.

We also have a donations button and, in return for a donation of £20 or more, we remove ads more directly. That must be still working because, as an Admin, I am not seeing ads. Donations link is here if you want to try that route app.php/donate

It's not totally gone away but much lessened, I only got it once, when I began this post.

Edit... and then immediately after posting.....
Edit... but then I made another post and no popup.. apparently random... but lessened.

I've had no issues either on Chrome 115.0.5790.160 - with uBO blocking 3 Google URL's - or Brave on Android (13) mobile.

I get the popup every single page I view and it's annoying; yes, I could donate to remove the ads but the site isn't worth it.

Most posts seem to end up being arguments between the same people, going over the same boring disagreements, I'm not going to pay for that.
There is little investment discussion when compared to other unrelated topics for which I have zero interest.

I'll just visit less, and possibly stop all together.

It was fun for a while but hasn't been for some time unfortunately.

**EDIT - 5 pop-ups in writing and editing this post, plus one each time I recommend a post I like is stupid and not friendly.

I just get the one pop-up when I first login. Nothing after that. So your experience must be something specific to your device setup.

It is a minor annoyance for me. Perhaps try a different machine or browser?

That's possible, I'm using Edge with AdBlocker but nothing more than that as I prefer simplicity.

I get it at least once, sometimes twice per page + for every like and several if I post.

Posting this from W10 with Edge and active uBO - no issues. No issues logged in with Chrome, Firefox or Brave - all with active uBO on W10.

So I'm guessing those with non uBO ad blockers could try using uBO instead. Those with no ad blockers at all - dunno. There must be something in your browser filtering that is triggering the alert from Google but as I haven't seen it I can't help by looking at blocked URL's/scripts et al.

I have no ad-blocker and I get the pop-up just once, at login. Fine afterwards.

Dell laptop, W10, Chrome.

Hmmm.

Chrome on W10.
Turned uBO off - still no issues but also no ads (normally with uBO off I would get served ads).
Turned Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1) and Tailscale VPN off as well - still no issues and still no ads.
Turned pop up and ad blocking off in chrome site settings - no pop up or ads.
Cleared cookies and cache - still no pop up or ads.
Restarted W10 (cold boot) - ditto.

^^ With uBO on I get the donate text and no ads without a gap, with it off I get the donate text and then a gap where the ad would have been and then the text at the bottom.

I don't run a hosts file so the gap might be because Stooz has temporarily suspended ads until the pop up annoyance gets solved for others? Is anyone else seeing ads?
