But recently I encountered something different: black chickpeas. Wanted them as an ingredient for a tasty broth, and the black ones were all I could find in a hurry. So I bought them despite the rather steep price.

Having much enjoyed the broth, they were worth every penny! They brought much more than just the nutrition to the meal, and made a real feature.

It seems there's more to chickpeas than I ever knew. What should I aim to try next?

AKA kala chana. This - https://www.vegrecipesofindia.com/kadal ... dala-kari/ is nice.

Canada is the biggest exporter of lentils, by far, so you might be lucky.

You've really piqued my curiosity now. How does one go about growing dried beans?

Note to self, I wonder if it freezes well?

Yep, hummus freezes very well. I recommend dolloping tablespoons (or whatever is your preferred portion size) on a baking sheet on a tray and freezing. Once frozen the portions can then be bagged together to save space.

Tahini is not something I have in my store cupboard so I use a dollop of peanut butter instead and it finishes up tasting lime shop bought so def does the trick

I wouldn't hold up shop-bought as an aspirational standard!

On the rare occasions I make my own, it comes out much richer and more tasty. Though I daresay the primary contributor to that is my liberal use of olive oil in the mix 8-)

They seem to be getting very fashionable.

I went into into a wholefood store the other day and saw they had chic peas on offer.
