My brother's best man was confused for a few days on moving to Glasgow as to why folk in the work took to calling him "Biscuit' - he'd nae hair and was called Gary.

My wife is from a remote French village and she tells me that as a child, their breakfast was hot chocolate with heavy local bread for dunking. Nowadays I see French people dunking croissants in coffee. Me? Yes I dunk biscuits in my tea but only during tea break at the bridge club, we never buy biscuits for the house.

Of course the ultimate dunk is Spanish churros - deep-fried dough sticks in mega-thick hot chocolate.

Yes, we had the same when I stayed with my French penfriend in the 70s, though I seem to remember it was more like weak coffee. What an eye-opener! Served at the table by dinner ladies at school, allowed to ride mopeds at 14, teenagers not supposed to smoke but nobody batted an eyelid, young kids allowed wine with their Sunday lunch, albeit watered down. A veritable paradise for a British teenager!

At a slight tangent, a French friend told me that when studying in London, she loved Hobnobs, and the shopkeeper always gave her a free pack if she would ask him nicely for the biscuits. Apparently her pronunciation "obnob" used to crack him up and he loved it. It may have helped that she was stunningly attractive as well!
