Which spreadsheet SW ?
Which spreadsheet software is everyone using these days ?
I'm on Excel 2010. Microsoft now have an irritating banner reminding me it's no longer supported, which of course I can close.
I did try setting it to not appear again until October 2070 in the registry, but that failed.
I tried Open Office spreadsheet, but am clearly not going to get on with this. I'm not going to pay any kind of recurring Office 365 subscription, so the remaining options seem to be muddling on with Excel 2010, or buying a newer version at a reasonable price.

Re: Which spreadsheet SW ?
I use Excel 2007 but also still use Lotus 123 a lot (shows how long I have been a spreadsheet user!)
Also use Office 365 as there are some useful facilities (eg Stock data)

I use LibreOffice as my default.
Portable version at: https://portableapps.com/apps/office/li ... e_portable
Standard desktop version at: https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/
Very similar to OpenOffice so maybe you won't get on with it. No idea why not, it does virtually anything Excel can do.
I had Office 2010 and needed to update it (mainly to support HYPTUSS), so I bought a licence for Office 2016 from https://pckeys.uk/

Re: Which spreadsheet SW ?
I and my wife regularly use more than one.
At work she uses the latest excel 365, while I currently use excel 2013.
At home she keeps accounts using LibreOffice and I use the same for HYPTUSS.
I also use google sheets many times a week to track my full portfolio and predict my financial future.
LibreOffice is slightly different from excel, but not enough to cause most people issues. The only issue would be other people, or if you demand that it has to be Microsoft excel.
Google sheets has limit's, but I wouldn't expect a home user to run into problems. It's free (like Libre) but great if you have to colaberate with others. Which again gets back to other people. I showed it's advantages to the wife, whoes response was "Billy wouldn't use it". So they are emailing excel files!
If you have a google account (ie an android phone) then give google sheets a go. You can use it anywhere that you can access the web using a standard browser though I'ed avoid using other peoples computers to do so.

I've been using Excel 2016 ever since it was released, as part of Office 2016.
Amazon sells single home user copies of Office 2016 for less than £60, with no subscription required.

I took out the subscription to Microsoft 365 which I think is worth it.
I get all the latest apps, and 1TB of storage too and I'm happy to pay for that.

In days of yore, I loved Lotus 1-2-3 macros. So easy.

Re: Which spreadsheet SW ?
I second kiloran's rec of Libre Office, which I found slightly better than Open Office when I switched a few years ago. It does the vast majority of things I need and I like the interface. I still use Excel 2007 for some things but there's very little I really need it for. I firmly believe that Microsoft has made Office worse with every "upgrade" since 2003 - I detest the ribbon - so have no intention of getting anything newer.
Libre Office will save in Excel formats and I've found very few cases of any incompatibility.

Re: Which spreadsheet SW ?
I was going to say Libre Office
- but then I realised I haven't installed it on this PC because I've been using Google Sheets
by the way if you're asking on behalf of "Test and Trace" it's not a Spreadsheet you need

Re: Which spreadsheet SW ?
Another vote for Google Sheets, which I have now migrated all of my various Excels onto. I'm hugely impressed with it, I can use it anywhere on any PC, and one less set of files I have to worry about keeping backed up. Quite handy that I can share the important stuff with Lady M too.

Re: Which spreadsheet SW ?
Thanks for the advice.
In addition to Excel, I have been using google sheets for activities like live tracking of portfolios & allocations. Including script to log daily data. Plus another sheet with my watchlist.
However, I find the graphs and some of the other functions don't meet my needs, hence the use of Excel on my PC. After reading the advice above, I've installed Libre Office. It's behaved closer to expectations on a couple of test tasks, so I'm going to give it a longer trial.
Thank you for the advice.

Whatever happened to Visicalc. I understood that it was Apple's killer app.

Spreadsheets are one of the best inventions. First I used was SuperCalc.

Yes I liked it and still do. It works under Win 10 and why rewrite things that still work perfectly well?

Re: Which spreadsheet SW ?
Incredibly it was originally written in x86 assembly language (by Jonathan Sachs) and released in 1983. That made it much much faster than Visicalc.

Re: Which spreadsheet SW ?
I've only very recently upgraded from Excel 2007 to 2019 (I say upgraded, but I've yet to find anything that's better in the latter version).
I too have fond memories of Lotus 1-2-3, when even I could add macros by simply recording them, and I created a multi sheet file for our cash office which not only reduced the time it took to balance the monies each evening from about half an hour to around five minutes, but gave us clues where to look when things didn't balance first time. It then, at the press of a button spat out a few pages of (correctly calculated!) paperwork which we previously had to write out by hand and double check before passing to the accountancy team. All this before networks were a thing and paper still ruled...
