HYTUSS_v11-74 not saving

#429071

Postby granretire » July 20th, 2021, 2:49 pm

When I open it, I get a popup stating:
This worktop contains links to other data sources.
If you update the links, Excel will attempt to retrieve the latest data
If you don't update the links, Excel will use the previous information
Whether I click on 'update' or 'don't update', I don't get the last spreadsheet that I saved
Using windows 10, Excel 2010

If I try and save under a different name, some strange file is saved under the name of BDD76B00 with no extension, ie not an excel file.

Whether or not I save under the same name or a different name Excel is opened again automatically with a side panel headed 'document recovery'. This is is not my latest spreadsheet, but the previous one. I am unable to save an updated spreadsheet

I'm not at all sure what is happening here. I can't think of any links which would need updating when HYPTUSS is opened. Are you sure that you have not inserted links to another workbook in your copy?

Your inability to save HYPTUSS sounds like a more general Excel issue rather than a specific HYPTUSS issue. I would reboot your PC, and download a fresh copy of HYPTUSS to see if that works OK

Sorry I can't be more helpful

Thanks for coming back to me. I hadn't (knowingly) inserted any links to another workbook.
I had assumed that my version of Excel had got corrupted somehow and did a repair before I raised the problem - but that didn't make any difference.
Anyway, I have downloaded the latest version and things have got even worse! I just get a blank EXcel sheet. The usual headers of file, home, insert, etc are there, but no data at all. No grid, no BP. The place on the lhs that shows the location where the cursor is states J14. No sheet tabs at the bottom.
Any other suggestions, please? Or should I abandon hope and try and getto gripes with LibreOffice?

Put HYPTUSS to one side for now...rule out if HYPTUSS is the issue or Excel. Maybe you version of Excel is corrupted?

Can you create and save a file, even a simple Excel file which adds 2 to 2!

The symptoms sound as if there is a problem with a temporary Excel file (for HYPTUSS), which is created when the file is opened and (should be) deleted when the file is closed. I would suggest deleting the HYPTUSS file and any other obviously odd files in the same folder before downloading a fresh copy. Alternatively download a fresh copy and run it from a different folder.

I am sorry, I don't understand what you are suggesting I do.
I have done a fresh download of v11-74 and it is sat in my downloads. Clicking on the zip file gives the spreadsheet with a compressed size of 309KB and the user guide. Double-clicking on the spreadsheet opens Excel with the top line of file, home, insert, etc
Next line is 'Protected view ... enable editing
Next line J14

Cliking on 'enable editing' gives Security warning Macros have been disabled Enable Content (still no spreadsheet which should show grid lines and BP)
Clicking on 'Enable content' then shows the various operations that are available in a spreadsheet - such as Cut, font, etc. The J14 has disappeared, but if I click on its downward arrow, it appears.

It sounds like you are doing everything within the zipped file and there lies danger, I think.

Go to your downloads folder, right-click on the zip file and select Extract All. That will create independent copies of HYPTUSS and the User Guide in your downloads folder (which you can then move to another folder if you wish), and hopefully that copy of HYPTUSS will work normally. The zipped copy should be unchanged, but it is not your working version

<straw-clutching>
What antivirus are you using? Could that be blocking HYPTUSS for some reason? Have you tried using HYPTUSS with antivirus disabled?

Are you starting afresh with the v11-74 version and entering shareholdings one by one or are you updating from an earlier version?

If you are copying shareholdings into v11-74 from an earlier version could there be links to files in another Excel sheet (for example, I link an Excel file to HYPTUSS such that when I run HYPTUSS, the scraped prices are fed into my master file).

The "next line J14 is confusing me" .

I've just downloaded the v11.74 (I also use W10, Excel 2010) and the files size is 309kb as you say and
I get the "protected view - enable editing" but all works fine. I can add shareholdings and get prices, yields and save the file ok. I didn't create a special directory, I just downloaded and viewed the file and clicked on it to open up Excel and HYPTUSS.

(look out and remove any existing .xlsm files that start with a tilda as their filename).

I am unable to get as far as entering any shares. There is NO grid. Normally when an excel spreadsheet is opened, a grid is displayed. No grid displayed. No BP, which, from what I remember, the HYTUSS is initially populated with - from which one adds ones shares.
If I knew how to add a screenshot to this thread I would - to show there is nothing there.
There is clearly something sick with what is happening. As I have previously stated, my other excel spreadsheets are performing as expected.

I think It's an Excel problem, which is why I suggested running the HYTUSS from a different folder. The strange file name BDD76B00 is a clue that a file, presumably HYTUSS, did not close properly and a temporary file remains. The fact that a document recovery option opens is also indicative of the same thing. Running the HYTUSS from a different folder would rule out that problem or confirm it. Granretire If you can say which version of Windows you are using then I'm sure someone can assist you to unzip the file to another folder and run that copy.

I have previously stated I am using windows 10, which is up to date. I usually unzip to desktop, but using a different location makes no difference.

Yes, sorry I missed the fact that you're using Windows 10. Have you tried making a new folder rather than re-using an existing one?

I've played around with a fresh download (but using Excel 2016) and it looks like I can reproduce what you seem to be describing as far as the display is concerned by clicking on the View menu and selecting Hide. The menu bar and ribbon still display but everything below that is blank.
I get back to normal by going to the View menu and selecting Unhide.

Your reference to J14 is the default cell selected on HYPTUSS v11.74

Does that help?

Alternatively, I could remove the following bit of code:

If User = "Granretire" then HideDisplay()

Had a look at View menu and playing with 'Hide' doesn't change anything - apart from if I click on Hide, most of the things like Normal, Page layout, etc become greyed out. Clicking on Unhide displays them again.
BUT, playing around with various options in View, I selected 'Full screen'. This (not surprisingly) filled the entire screen with a spreadsheet. But the spreadsheet had its grid lines and BP!! Checked that I could edit it and saved it. Will now enter my full data and see how things go.
Thanks again for this useful tool (when it works) and the time you have spent trying to sort out my interesting feature.
(Would love to know what had caused it)

This really is odd. I really think it is an Excel issue rather than something inherent within HYPTUSS and I still have the feeling that the problem is related to hidden windows.
Have a read of this: http://xbs.ie/how-fix-troubles-caused-h ... -ms-excel/

When you open your HYPTUSS, look at the title at the very top of the workbook. Does it have .xls followed by a colon and a number, like hyp_topup_spreadsheet v11.74.xls:1

edit.... this may also help https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mso ... a7bcad2ecc
