Update prices, Gaier softwar
I use Gaier software to update the current price of my shares in MS Money. It has worked fine for years. But today I get 'Failed to update quotes. Failed to resolve sysmbols from Money file to Full Instrument IDs on MSN Money'. Anyone else having a problem?

Re: Update prices, Gaier softwar
Never heard of it, but a quick google for that error message gets, amongst others:
"Some people are saying they still receive the error message "Failed to update quotes. Failed to fetch quotes from MSN Money" with version 2.4. So far, it looks like this is caused by anti-virus software preventing MSMoneyQuotes from making calls to the internet. To fix, please whitelist MSMoneyQuotes in your anti-virus software."

Dunno if that'll help in your case but gotta be worth a try ....

Think I tried that, ie not sure I really know how to whitelist in Windows Defender. But, if I did it correctly, it didn't work

Are we right to assume that it's currently set to update all your MS Money investment entries?
If I remember rightly, there's a method of un-selecting them all and then setting them to individually update single-symbol prices, and if that process is available, it might well highlight a single entry that perhaps has had it's EPIC recently changed, or some similar issue on a specific entry?
Cheers,

Yes, it is to update all. I have a file, symbolmap.csv, that contains all the epic codes. I update it when necessary for any changes

And are you able to change that update process to just update different single-holdings at all?
If you are - does that work with a 'known good' holding EPIC?
Separately, taking your symbolmap.csv process into account, there could be a test you might be able to do on a TEMPORARY symbolmap.csv file, which maps all your current holdings to a single EPIC, and trying that process might at least prove that the overall price-update routine is working, and perhaps gives an alternative attack-route to expose which individual holding might be failing if the 'Same EPIC' pricing update process works to get the same price against all the holdings - all you need to do then is work through the TEMPORARY symbolmap.csv file and update each individual temporary (same) EPIC with the actual holding EPIC, and then test each time to hopefully expose the holding-line failure...

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it made no difference. It still complained about a single epic

With the same error showing when you select each of the single epics individually?
If that's the case, then it looks like a 'whole process' failure, rather than a failure of an individual holding, and the earlier investigation route looking at local Firewalls might help to fix it.

Yes, but that was with regards to funds. These are ordinary, run of the mill, UK stocks

Re: Update prices, Gaier softwar
I have found the reason for the problem from Gaier website:
Microsoft’s “Auto Complete” quote service has been down for several weeks. In MSMoneyQuotes, you will see an error that looks like the following "Failed to update quotes. Failed to resolve symbols for Money file to Full Instrument IDs on MSN Money." The “Auto Complete” service is the quote service used when trying to lookup a symbol. This affects MSMoneyQuotes because it uses this quote service to resolve symbols in your Money file to MSN Money Financial Instruments. This not only affects MSMoneyQuotes and my Excel Add-In, but also impacts their own products like the MSN Money Windows 10 and iOS apps.

Are you running any other antivirus / antimalware software? I know for sure that Malwarebytes blocks Kiloran's price-scraping calls from LibreOffice under Windows 10. Because the damned thing pops up and tells me it has. And no, I haven't bothered to find out how to whitelist it either.

I'm puzzled. It is working for me currently, and I have never seen this error message. I usually pull quotes on a Friday, so I suppose it could be down for a few days, but that wouldn't seem to justify a permanent message on the Gaier site.
