Updated version of Simple Yahoo Price Scrape

#605654

Postby kiloran » July 30th, 2023, 10:51 am

A number of you have been using the "Simple Yahoo Price Scrape" Excel spreadsheet initially developed by Itsallaguess.

Yahoo deleted their Finance API a few weeks ago, so the "Simple Yahoo Price Scrape" no longer works.

I've updated the Excel and LibreOffice spreadsheets to get them functional again, and renamed them "Simple Price Scrape". They are available at: https://lemonfoolfinancialsoftware.weeb ... crape.html

A few notes:
  1. The original Yahoo version allowed the downloading of global prices, market indices, and exchange rates. The new version is restricted to share prices on the London Stock Exchange (but does include bonds and ETFs)
  2. The process initially loads prices for shares in the FTSE All-Share index, then fills in any gaps on a share-by-share basis
  3. Shares must now be referenced using the EPIC symbol (so, for example, BT.A and not the Yahoo symbol BT-A,L)
  4. The price source for the data is https://shareprices.com/ which was chosen for the relatively simple process to extract data and speed of response

A manual workaround to obtain whichever currencies, indicies etc on which you want to keep an eye would be to set up a Yahoo quotes page in your bookmarks such as this
https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/quotes/GBPEUR=X,GBPUSD=X,BZ=F,%5EFTSE,%5EGSPC,%5EDJI/view/v1

The non obvious symbols are
- BZ=F is Brent oil in dollars
- ^GSPC is the S&P 500

You can add or remove symbols as required and save to your bookmark

I'll be reviewing the Yahoo stuff again when the dust settles. I wanted to implement a solution relatively quickly using known techniques rather than potentially spend far more time trying (or failing) to get a Yahoo solution working
