I apologise unreservedly. I didn't know it was against the rules, and it was a work meeting anyway. Now, pass the wine round please. Hic.

Old enough to have read Brighton Rock ?
Although having looked it up (like a good engineer) Greene used 'Kolley Kibber' as the character name

How old are you?
Well, not that old, but we all read some history books.
I was, however left wondering if the 1922 Committee should celebrate their centenary by organising a vote.

Are we voting for the lack of wine, the taste of the wine, or the lack of straws?

Indeed!
I only know about Lobby Lud because my father used to use the phrase, and he told me about him. He didn't tell me where the actual name came from. Apparently it was named after the newspaper's (Westminster Gazette) Telegraphic address of "Lobby, Ludgate"

Re: Register - Beerpig's Snug
I vaguely remember that in one of the Poirot TV series with David Suchet as Poirot some one kept going up to him and addressing him as "Lobby Lud" and demanding their £5 prize.

Re: Register - Beerpig's Snug
I can remember from pre-WW2 that our local carnival had a mystery man. Not Lobby Lud, obviously, but something similar. My father was Secretary to the Carnival Committee and usually got one of his friends to take on the job. A picture in the programme with a bunch of pound notes obscuring most of the face. He wore a hat, of course. Those were the days of white fivers and ten bob notes.
