I rushed home to watch if after going to a local village fete..several pints of cider later, I sat in front of the TV for an annual evening "in" watching it. Woke up several minutes before the popular vote

well, whilst not disagreeing with you, that's always been the case. Arguably the greatest product of Eurovision is/was Abba, and they AFAIK sang exclusively in English, 50 years ago.
