Dontcha just love these parents?

I assume that the poor kid will not be baptised?

Couple defend choice to call baby Lucifer after New Years birth

Jess said: "It has mostly been people from the older generation who have told us: 'You can't call him that, what will it be like when he's at school?'

"But we are just normal loving parents and certainly have no interest in associating our son with the devil, that's not what this is about.

"The name is lovely and it actually means "lighter bringer" which is exactly what he has done for our lives.

The mother conveniniently passes over the question about school.

So what will the bullies call him at school? Lucy?

Steve

PS I have a strong interest in language and accept the origin of Lucifer. But try explaining that to the kids in assembly! :?

I suspect everyone will call him 'Lucy', except the parent who might try and shorten it to 'Luke'.

At least it wasn't Amenadiel ;)

About 15 years back my chum had a book of baby names, one was expected. Just in the A section Axel-Rod and Adolf were good for a laugh. We expanded on the idea and I went to a baby naming website to promote Chlamydia as a lovely girls name. The same joke came back to me recently through another friend who had been suggesting Cloaca.

A couple we know have had to put a brave face on the name they innocently chose for their daughter all those years ago. It's the name of an Egyptian goddess of healing and motherhood. A conciliator and gentle protector. And a name that will forever be associated with the dreaming spires of Oxford. Yes, it's Isis. Oof, a bit of a tough one. Sorry kid.

All right, it's not like calling your son Jihad, which you can also certainly do. Or Cyanide, which the registrars wouldn't swallow in Wales. And there are banned names in a great many countries. Germany forbids Adolf (for obvious reasons), Judas isn't allowed in Switzerland, and Sweden has banned Metallica and Ikea. Mexico has outlawed Robocop, while France's registrars refused somewhat puzzlingly to accept Nutella.

To see the best of the highly entertaining names that won't work in New Zealand, you'll have to look them up at https://www.parents.com/baby-names/18-i ... your-list/.

Any more?

I'm pretty sure you can't name a child in the UK with a first name Prince/Princess/King/Queen/Sir/Dame etc.

Scott.

Isis is a beautiful name, and beautiful goddess. I love it, and I was very upset when some ignoramus invented the modern meaning. Hopefully that is temporary and will fade, after which we can admire once more those images of the goddess and her comforting wings without ugly associations.

Just call your brat Trouble and you should be fine. 8-)

When my mother came to apply for British nationality (she was, by that time, married to a Brit), one of her forenames was problematic with TPTB.

Regina.

She never used it. Her first name was always unpronouncable to Brits, and got shortened to something that would look rude if seen in isolation or by the easily-offended.

Her father's second forename was Adolf. He was of course born before notoriety came to that name. He too never used it.

Hi All.

It's a shame about names having connotations.

ISIS could have been saved by using its alternate ISIL (the 'L' being Levant). I happen to know a very nice Isis.

Adolf has pluses and minuses. Apart from the obvious, there was also Adolf Eichmann as a minus. As a plus, at least in the modern consumer's eyes, is Adolf Dassler.

Regards, Newroad

I went to school with a girl called Regina, she had an elder sister called Josephine. Maybe her parents had delusions of grandeur.

One disadvantage of having Elon Musk as father is the impediment of being called X Æ A-Xii, Exa Dark Sideræl or Techno Mechanicus (his other nine children have less esoteric names).

I used to know a Roxanne Rowles, I believe it was the name her parents gave her. I just looked her up on Google and there she is, looks a bit older now like the rest of us :)

Being a Wodehouse fan I wanted to call our son Psteven, but Lady M wasn't having it unfortunately. He could have had a lot of fun with that silent P.

Isis Equity Partners used to make good money for their investors, including me.

Then they changed the name, and investment performance fell off a cliff.

My brother once had a girlfriend whose name, if combined with ours in double-barrelled form, would've been unfortunate for somewhat similar reasons ;)

My best friend at primary school was called Richard Edward. I doubt anyone would get away with that pair of names these days.

I had 2 friends in Hove, Phil and Jill Wood. Their duaghters were Jessica and Holly.

After possibly a year it hit me "Holly Wood" I exclaimed - "I just realised".
"Yes" replied Phil flatly, "We realised when she was 2".

Paul (who has 2 birth certificates with my forenames switched as mum didn't like the initials on the first one, not that that EVER caused problems).

An Australian dad who tricked his wife into naming their daughter after his favourite football team isn't the only one.

Claire Smith thought her partner had chosen the name Lanesra because it was "unique and romantic".

He only revealed its true meaning two years later - look at it backwards and you will see it spells [expletive deleted].
