Especially scary because the Chinese assume that bombing Japan with 80+ US bases will happen without USA retaliation. That's not a bet I would take.

Given the atrocities that Japan committed in China, when 10.2 million died between 1937 and 1945, one can understand a deep animosity.

Hopefully by the time one or more of these catastrophes occur, mankind will have established colonies elsewhere, as Hawking recommended, and the Musk and Bezos clans will be flourishing on Mars, the Moon or other challenging places.

I think it would be helpful if we schedule only one catastrophe at a time! We need to space them out.

Best wishes

Mark.

So who supports the Taliban? Why Russia and China of course. All delighting in the West's humiliating defeat. World order looks just great doesn't it?

I absolutely agree. It will be nice for us all to start again, joining forces in a new environment.

However, will we be able to buy our own Oxygen-generating modules, or have to share oxygen with those who have never paid any tax in their lives? Will our health insurance cover us? Can we go private? Will there be organic food shops? Will Amazon deliver? What are the mortgage rates on the DeLuxe Barratt habitation units? Do we need planning permission to add a conservatory?

PS we will move around but human nature will not change.

People have short memories. So who was it that drove the Soviets out of Afghanistan in 1989 and shot down 333 of their helicopters and 120 other planes? And killed so many Soviet troops in nine years that there were serious public rumblings in the Russian streets. (Which was one of the things that drove the disintegration of the USSR in the end.) The official Soviet death count was given as 26,000, but it was unofficially reckoned to be four or five times that.

Who were these heroes? Why, those indomitable mujaheddin, of course. Hiding out in the Panjshir mountain valleys, where the air was so thin that the Soviet helicopter gunships couldn't fly properly - at which point they could be swatted down like flies by a hand-held rocket missile. Oh, how we cheered when Moscow admitted defeat and went home with its tail between its legs.

Hmmm, perspectives change, but the realities don't. Tough country, tough people. :|

All those films have survivors don't they?

I'm not sure this is strictly true. If I recall correctly there were about a dozen or so species of man with only Homo Sapien surviving and I believe even we came very close to extinction.

I'm sorry PJ I've got take issue with you on this. About two years ago I came upon a very depressing person. No mental health issues, just very negative. It was then that I realised there are actually three personalities in the world. The first like you and I (and Snorvey) are half glass full types. Then there are the half glass empty types. But there's a third type. They have no glass at all. And they are thoroughly depressing. Not only would they predict the end of the world will be on Friday at 3pm, thirty minutes before everyone goes home for the weekend but they would predict that only you would survive.

Some people say the glass is half empty or half full, but to me that’s irrelevant because I’m having another drink.

RIP Sean Lock....

Thanks AiY
I do know there are negative bods around - I feel sorry for them
we only have one life (I know that is asking for a debate!) so you might as well enjoy it
can't remember if it was on here or another forum
but the problem with being like you, Snorvey or me, is that half your glass is still empty

If my glass is half-full, I still have another half to drink before I get another pint.

If my glass is half-empty, I am already half-way to my next pint.

People have never learnt the lesson of history. Nobody has ever had a successful invasion, occupation, colonialisation of Afghanistan. I suspect that the Taliban never went away, they just laid low and bided their time. That is why the take-over was so swift, they were in position already.

Yes, and it's the end of Afghanistan's next entrant for Miss World.
